The National Trading Standards Regional Investigations and eCrime Team, based at City of York Council are seeking a Witness Care Officer.

In this role you will work with our established team of investigators, who conduct high profile regional and national criminal investigations into large scale breaches of trading standards legislation, fraud and money laundering.

A successful candidate will support witnesses, to guide them through the criminal justice process; acting as the primary contact for witnesses in the team’s criminal investigations, from the taking of witness statements to the conclusion of the court cases.

Without witnesses we cannot take prosecutions. We are looking for someone with a real customer focus, who can assess a witness’ needs and put into place strategies to support them, to ensure the team’s prosecutions can succeed.

Previous experience of work in the criminal justice system would assist but is not essential. Having the ability to problem solve, in what can sometimes be challenging situations, is a must.

The role is a full time, permanent role. You will work mainly at home, with some site visits and occasional attendance at City of York Council’s Hazel Court offices.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express themselves spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.

This post will be subject to a Police Vetting request.

Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. Each role at CYC is different and your working arrangements will be determined based on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you and your needs as part of the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.
