Help Protect Communities and Shape Conwy's Future
Flooding and climate change are among the biggest challenges facing local authorities today. At Conwy County Borough Council, we are investing in the resilience of our communities, infrastructure and natural environment, and we're looking for an experienced and ambitious Senior Flood Risk Officer to help lead that work.
This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in delivering flood risk management across the county, protecting homes, businesses and vital infrastructure while helping to shape strategic priorities for the future.
Working as part of our Flood Risk and Infrastructure Team, you will combine technical expertise, leadership and partnership working to deliver innovative solutions that reduce flood risk and improve resilience across Conwy.
What You'll Be Doing
No two days are the same in this varied and rewarding role. You will:
• Lead the delivery of local and national flood risk management strategies and action plans.
• Oversee Conwy's responsibilities as a Sustainable Drainage Approval Body (SAB) and consenting authority.
• Drive flood investigations, hydraulic modelling, mapping projects and the management of flood risk assets and data.
• Secure and manage funding opportunities that deliver long-term benefits for communities.
• Manage projects, budgets and technical programmes from concept through to delivery.
• Work closely with Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales, developers, consultants, elected members, communities and regional partners.
• Support, develop and mentor team members to deliver high-quality services.
• Play a key role in emergency planning and response arrangements as part of the Flood Duty Officer rota.
About You:
We're looking for a motivated professional who is passionate about making a difference and has the skills and experience to lead complex and important work.
You will have:
• A degree in Civil Engineering, Flood Risk Management, Environmental Studies or a related discipline.
• Extensive experience in flood risk management, including drainage design, river modelling and hydrology.
• Strong knowledge of flood risk legislation, policy and best practice.
• Experience of hydraulic assessments, hydrological modelling and GIS mapping software.
• Experience of managing technical data and flood risk information systems.
• Excellent project management, organisational and financial management skills.
• The confidence to engage with a wide range of stakeholders and explain complex technical matters clearly.
• The ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes.
Chartered status, or progress towards chartership through a relevant professional institution, would be advantageous, as would Welsh language skills.
Why Join Conwy?
This is more than a technical role. It's an opportunity to influence strategic decision-making, lead important projects and help communities adapt to the increasing challenges of climate change.
In return, we offer:
• Flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
• Generous annual leave entitlement.
• Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
• Opportunities for professional development and career progression.
• A supportive and collaborative working environment.
• The chance to make a lasting impact on the future resilience of Conwy.
