Background What if we could resolve the epigenome of individual cell types from complex human tissues without ever having to physically separate the cells? The majority of disease-associated genetic variants exert their effects by modulating gene expression, driving considerable interest in…
Background Cancer cells often depend on specific genes to survive, making those genes attractive drug targets. CRISPR screens knock out genes to measure their importance for cancer cell survival, and large efforts such as DepMap and Project Score have mapped individual single‑gene dependencies…
There is increasing evidence that the mitochondrial genome may be regulated by DNA modifications, but their extent, identity and functional importance remain unclear. This uncertainty partly reflects technical limitations, as conventional approaches for measuring DNA methylation can generate…
Spectroscopy has long offered a powerful window into nature, revealing the hidden structure and dynamics of matter through its interaction with light. Extending this window to individual microorganisms could transform understanding of how antibiotics act on living cells. Within apparently uniform…
Coevolution is the process of species evolving together and influencing each other’s evolutionary path. For a system of microbes and viruses, this entails an ongoing dynamic of the host microbe evading infection and the virus overcoming this protection. However, when fluid flow drives these…
Engineered flavoproteins, LOV domains, and fluorescent proteins have recently demonstrated that radical pair mechanisms (RPM) can serve as biological qubits with optical readouts, achieving magnetic field responses up to a 50% fluorescence change in living cells. However, reaching such a large…
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder that causes a range of symptoms and affects approximately 1 in 3,000 people. These include abnormalities in skin pigmentation, problems with the heart and circulatory system, and nerve tumours that cause chronic pain and movement problems. This…
Background: Musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis and Dupuytren’s contracture are severely disabling disorders that affect millions of people in the UK. Genome-wide association studies have identified hundreds of common genetic variants that increase risk of musculoskeletal disorders.…
