Job summary
The Safeguarding Nurse/Practitioner will demonstrate a sound understanding of the needs and risks affecting vulnerable adults, children and families. Acting as a visible role model, the post holder will provide clinical support, expert advice and practical guidance to wards and departments across the Trust, under the supervision of the Named Nurse for Safeguarding and in accordance with national and local safeguarding guidance.
This is an internal recruitment opportunity offered as a 9-month fixed-term contract or secondment to provide maternity cover. It is designed as a development opportunity for an existing ROH registered nurse or Allied Health Professional (AHP) with some safeguarding experience who wishes to develop specialist safeguarding knowledge and skills. The post holder will receive structured supervision, support and mentorship from the Named Nurse for Safeguarding, Lead Nurse for Safeguarding and Vulnerabilities, and Head of Safeguarding, enabling them to develop experience across all aspects of safeguarding practice.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will support the safeguarding team in monitoring and improving standards of care, providing safeguarding advice to frontline staff, contributing to safeguarding governance, audits and quality improvement, and assisting with the planning and delivery of mandatory safeguarding training. They will develop and apply knowledge of key safeguarding legislation and guidance, including the Children Act (2004), Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023), the Mental Capacity Act (2005), Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, the Domestic Abuse Act (2021), and the Care Act (2014).
The Safeguarding Nurse/Practitioner will work collaboratively with internal teams and external partner agencies to minimise risk and promote the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable adults, children and families.
Applicants must be an existing ROH registered nurse or HCPC-registered Allied Health Professional (AHP) with recent clinical experience, some safeguarding experience, evidence of continuing professional development, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to professionally challenge practice where required.
Job description
To work as part of the Safeguarding Team and support the named nurse, safeguarding lead and head of safeguarding
Act as a resource and provide support to wards and clinical areas on safeguarding patients by:
Ensuring adherence to Trust policies, procedures and guidelines
Maintain accurate and confidential records
Offer expertise and advice to multidisciplinary team members including supervision
Work with Clinicians in the Trust to promote Safeguarding and to identify relevant cases.
Independently assess, implement and evaluate patients with complex safeguarding needs, be able to complete DoLs processes, Early Help assessments, MARAC and other multi agency referrals.
Demonstrate enhanced communication skills when dealing with difficult or challenging situations.
Maintain and develop appropriate levels of specialist knowledge and skills to ensure the service remains dynamic and responsive to the needs of the patients and the Trust.
Work closely with Social Services to review and complete safeguarding referrals
The post holder will escalate safeguarding issues highlighted by external agencies against the Trust.
The post holder will document and communicate clear safeguarding care plans and management plans to the clinical teams concerned with individual patient care.
Maintain a high profile within the clinical environment to enhance clinical relationships and maintain personal practice knowledge and skills where appropriate by:
Providing clinical support in response to safeguarding needs such as during periods of high levels of inpatient activity.
Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, carers, significant others, and wider Multi-Disciplinary Teams and Multi-Agency Teams.
Assist the safeguarding team in the continued progression and development of the Trust Wide safeguarding service, this includes safeguarding care plans and embedding Trust Safeguarding Strategy.
Refer patients as necessary to other health care professionals within the multidisciplinary team to ensure a co-ordinated approach to meeting the needs of patients.
Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met.
