Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Congenital Cardiac Service as Fetal and Paediatric Cardiac Physiology Service Manager at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and St Michael's Hospital. This senior leadership role offers the chance to shape and develop one of the UK's leading specialist congenital cardiac physiology services.

As the professional lead for a highly skilled team, you will provide strategic, clinical and operational leadership across fetal and paediatric cardiac physiology services, supporting patients from diagnosis before birth through childhood and adolescence. You will drive innovation, service improvement and workforce development, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care across the South West and South Wales.

Leading a specialist team delivering diagnostic, therapeutic and interventional cardiac physiology services, you will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to enhance quality, performance and sustainability. As a senior Healthcare Scientist and expert practitioner, you will champion evidence-based practice, develop advanced clinical expertise and contribute to regional and national service developments.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide strategic, clinical and operational leadership for the Fetal Cardiac and Paediatric Congenital Cardiac Physiology Service, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality and patient-centred care. They will be responsible for developing and delivering the service vision, managing capacity and resources, leading service transformation and maintaining the highest standards of clinical governance, patient safety and professional practice.

Working collaboratively with senior clinical, scientific and operational colleagues, the post holder will lead workforce planning, talent development, education and succession planning to build a highly skilled and sustainable service. They will champion innovation, research and the adoption of new technologies, while using performance, quality and patient experience data to drive continuous improvement. The role also includes contributing to financial planning, supporting regional congenital cardiac networks and representing the service at local, regional and national forums to influence the future development of paediatric and congenital cardiac physiology services.

This position requires an exceptional leader who can balance advanced clinical expertise, operational delivery and long-term strategic planning within a complex and highly specialised healthcare environment.

Job description

The Fetal Cardiac and Paediatric Cardiac Physiology Service Manager is a senior leadership position within the Congenital Cardiac Service, responsible for providing expert professional influence across a highly specialised clinical environment. The postholder will act as a visible ambassador for Healthcare Science, championing the role of cardiac physiology within multidisciplinary care and ensuring that the profession contributes effectively to organisational priorities, service innovation and improved patient outcomes. They will provide expert advice to senior leaders and clinicians, supporting strategic decision-making and helping to shape the future direction of congenital cardiac services across the region.

The role requires the ability to influence across organisational and professional boundaries, building strong relationships with regional partners, educational institutions, professional bodies and healthcare networks. The postholder will help create opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing and the adoption of best practice, ensuring the service remains at the forefront of healthcare science developments. As a recognised senior professional leader, they will promote a culture that values inclusion, innovation, professional excellence and continuous learning, while supporting the wider advancement of cardiac physiology and specialised children's services.

The postholder will represent the service and profession at local, regional and national forums, contributing to strategic discussions that influence the development of congenital cardiac pathways, healthcare science practice and specialist service provision. They will foster productive partnerships with healthcare providers, academic organisations and professional networks to support collaborative working, research opportunities, innovation and the dissemination of best practice across the wider healthcare system.

They will provide expert professional advice on emerging developments in cardiac physiology, healthcare science and specialised paediatric care, ensuring that national policy, research findings and professional standards are considered within future service planning. The postholder will also promote the contribution of Healthcare Science within the organisation, supporting professional visibility, career development and the continued advancement of the specialty while ensuring that patient and family perspectives remain central to future developments.
