Florence Nightingale Bicentenary Fellow in StatisticsUniversity

Oxford Full time £49,119 - £58,265 a year
Posted 24 September 2026 Closing date 21 October 2026

Location: 24-29 St Giles, Oxford, OX1 3LB

This post is fixed-term for 2 years in the first instance.

The Department of Statistics is recruiting a Florence Nightingale Bicentenary Fellow. These are career development positions intended to carry around half the teaching load of an ordinary Oxford faculty position. Funding for research costs of £2,000 per year will be available.

The post holders will join the dynamic and collaborative Department of Statistics. The Department carries out world-leading research in computational statistics, machine learning, theoretical statistics, and probability as well as applied statistics fields, including statistical and population genetics, bioinformatics and statistical epidemiology. The Department moved to a prominent and extensively renovated building in the centre of Oxford in 2015, and this move has further enhanced our vibrant research environment. We possess state-of-the-art facilities for our teaching and research, including two lecture theatres. Research from the Department of Statistics and the Mathematical Institute in Oxford was submitted together for the UK’s most recent national research assessment exercise, the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. Overall, 78% of our submission was judged to be 4* (the highest score available, for research quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance, and rigour). This outstanding result is a testament to the breadth, quality and impact of the research produced by colleagues in our two departments, and the outstanding environment in which they work, supported by our excellent professional services staff.

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in the field of statistics or a related subject. The Department seeks candidate with interests in any field of research which integrates well with the research carried out within the Oxford Protein Informatics group.

We proudly hold a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award and a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our commitment to openness, inclusivity and transparency, we would particularly welcome applications from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type at Oxford. Applicants will be selected for interview purely based on their ability to satisfy the selection criteria as outlined in full in the job description. You will be required to upload a statement setting out how you meet the selection criteria, a curriculum vitae, further details/other documents e.g. publications list and the contact details of two referees as part of your online application. Please note that applicants are responsible for contacting their referees and making sure that their letters are sent to [email protected] directly, quoting the reference number & job title 188841, Florence Nightingale Bicentenary Fellow in Statistics, by the closing date.

Please direct informal enquiries about the post to [email protected], quoting vacancy reference 188841.

Only applications received before 12.00 noon UK time on 21.10.2026 can be considered. Interviews are anticipated to be held on 30.10.2026.

£49,119 to £58,265 (with a discretionary range to £65,336) per annum
