Job summary

The role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to support the delivery of high-quality, safe, and compassionate care to women and their babies. The post holder will be a competent member of the maternity team at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, working within a defined scope of practice following completion of the required competency-based training.

The MSW will work under the indirect or direct supervision of a registered Midwife and will be guided by the Midwife's expertise while undertaking delegated duties appropriate to the role. The post holder will provide support to women and their families throughout the postnatal period, delivering care within both individual and group settings.

Key responsibilities include:

• Assisting with the personal care of women and babies.
• Supporting infant feeding, including the initiation and promotion of breastfeeding.
• Providing information and advice on self-care and newborn care.
• Promoting health and wellbeing through education and health promotion activities.
• Undertaking clerical and administrative duties to support the maternity service.
• Assisting with educational and housekeeping duties to ensure the smooth running of the ward and wider maternity team.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; however, Welsh and English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) include:

• Assisting in the delivery of care to women and their babies throughout the postnatal period.
• Undertaking routine observations of mothers and babies, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation measurements, in accordance with local policies and competencies.
• Maintaining accurate patient records and undertaking a range of clerical and administrative duties.
• Providing health education and support to parents on a one-to-one basis and within group settings.
• Obtaining blood samples for testing following appropriate training and competency assessment.
• Preparing, cleaning, and maintaining clinical equipment and resources.
• Promoting, supporting, and encouraging breastfeeding in line with Baby Friendly standards and local guidance.
• Reporting concerns, changes in condition, or other relevant issues promptly to a registered Midwife.
• Ensuring clinical environments are clean, safe, well-stocked, and tidy at all times.
• Supporting the smooth and effective running of the maternity ward and wider multidisciplinary team.

Job description

The successful candidate will support the Midwifery Team in the delivery of safe, high-quality care for women and their babies, while maintaining a clean, tidy, and safe environment that promotes excellent patient care and experience.

Key responsibilities will include supporting women and their families during the postnatal period, assisting with routine care and observations, maintaining accurate records, preparing equipment, and undertaking a range of administrative duties, including the ordering and management of ward supplies.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a caring, compassionate, and empathetic approach, with the ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with women, families, colleagues, and members of the multidisciplinary team. Significant relevant work or life experience that demonstrates transferable skills and knowledge applicable to this role is essential.

This post involves rotational shift working, including days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays, to meet the needs of the service.

The post holder will be required to successfully complete a relevant Level 3 qualification within the first two years of employment, supported by the Health Board.
