Job summary

  • This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of Physician Associates providing care for patients admitted to Trauma and Orthopaedics.
  • The postholder will be part of a team of PAs working across different areas in the department; wards, clinic, theatres, etc.
  • They will be working closely with Consultant of the week, Registrars and Junior Orthopaedic Research Fellows responsible for patients on the ward, including both elective and trauma patients. Dedicated sessions for clinic and theatre work will also be developed for the post holder.
  • The PA team also lead the departments virtual fracture clinic alongside the on callconsultant.The post holder will be required to provide assistance to the Consultant Surgeons and Specialist Registrars in the provision of high quality care within the department.
  • They will be expected to participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge, working within operating theatres, wards and outpatient clinics.
  • The role involves being second on call with the registrars over night and weekend duties in a 1-9 week rota basis.

Main duties of the job

Assess and examine acutely unwell medical patients, order appropriate investigations, interpret investigation findings, form a list of differential diagnoses and recommend treatment accordingly.o Active member of the daily consultant led ward rounds, presenting and reviewing patientsbased on the ward, and making timely and relevant documentation as appropriate.o Perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, subject to training/experience. (Including, butnot limited to Venepuncture, Cannulation, ABG sampling, ECG, Catheterisation, NG tube insertion, Fracture reduction and Casting, Joint aspiration, etc)o Review, asses and admit patients alongside the registrar during out of hours shift, in resus, A&E, and urgent care.o Perform other tasks, not prohibited by law in which the physician associate has been trained and is proficient to perform.o Conduct virtual triage phone call clinics led by the on call consultanto Liaise and initiate referrals to other specialties, other hospitals and GP practices as necessarywithin their line of work.o Liaise with families and next of kin as necessary, to ensure excellent care is always providedfor our patients.o Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completing dischargesummaries and support optimising bed capacity.o Support the pre-operative assessment of patients for surgery to ensure optimisation ofpatients' health prior to admission for surgery.
