Job summary

The Head of Estates leads on operational management and strategic development of the Trust's Estate. The role has overall responsibility for ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of the Trust's Estates function to appropriate standards and specifications so that it achieves its strategic and operational objectives and delivers the Trust's commitment to be outstanding in all it does.

The role leads on ensuring that all repairs and maintenance works are carried out to the highest professional standards, and provide complaint, safe, quality, timely, cost effective and customer focussed outcomes in line with local policy and legal responsibilities.

You will provide specialist and professional expertise. Identifying and advising the Associate Director of Estates and Capital on improving and developing the Estates function so that it remains responsive to internal and external demands, is consistently patient focussed and fully supports future strategic and operational service delivery needs as the Trust responds to new challenges and opportunities.

The role deputises for the Associate Director of Estates, covering absences, preparing for and attending internal and external meetings, advising on PFI and lease arrangements, management of estates staff not usually in their direct line management, liaising with relevant internal colleagues on strategic issues, operational and management of departmental objectives.

Main duties of the job

Leadership

  • Be a positive role model for team members through effective leadership and guidance, ensuring that they consistently deliver the requirements of the Trust's CARE core values, statutory and regulatory obligations.2. Engage positively with them and ensure they are supported and encouraged to perform to consistently high standards, deploying appropriate leadership and coaching techniques.3. Provide specialist Estates, maintenance and construction advice and information to clinical leads, project teams, and operational and corporate Directors.4. Carry out appraisals and one to ones for direct reports, ensure they are aware of their objectives and how they should be effectively delivered. Ensure other line managers carry out appraisals and one to ones for their team members. Ensure timely action is taken to address the outcomes of all appraisals.5. Enhance capability within the Estates team by ensuring personal development needs are regularly reviewed. Ensure identified development needs are met, including providing or arranging coaching for team members when required.6. Ensure team members are aware of and adhere to HR policies and procedures, including sickness, disciplinary and performance management. Ensure that these are applied consistently and fairly. Address any grievances and disciplinary matters within policy guidelines.7. Actively support team member health and well-being, seeking specialist HR advice where appropriate.

Job description

Head of Estates

Lead the operational management and strategic development of the Trust's estate, ensuring safe, compliant, high quality and cost effective Estates services that support outstanding patient care and organisational objectives.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Estates, you will provide expert leadership across maintenance, compliance, construction and capital projects, ensuring buildings remain fit for purpose, accessible and responsive to future service needs. You will oversee the delivery of mechanical, electrical and building services, champion statutory compliance, manage key contractor relationships, and drive continuous service improvement.

As a senior leader, you will inspire and develop Estates teams, promote a high performance culture aligned to the Trust's values, and provide specialist advice to clinical, operational and corporate colleagues. You will also deputise for the Associate Director of Estates, representing the department at internal and external meetings and contributing to strategic decision making.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Leading Estates operations, maintenance and compliance programmes
  • Responsible for major capital and infrastructure projects
  • Ensuring statutory and regulatory compliance across the estate
  • Developing policies, service standards and performance measures
  • Leading and developing Estates managers and wider teams
  • Managing performance and ensuring value for money
  • Supporting organisational change programmes and strategic objectives
