Job summary

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Cytology department was chosen in 2019 to be the provider of HPV primary testing for the East of England. This means that we are now testing up to 450,000 cervical screening samples per year for HPV using the high throughput Roche Cobas systems for patients across the East of England.

The laboratory also currently processes around 2,000 diagnostic cytology samples per year.

It is a very busy department, and is sited in modern, well-equipped accommodation at the Cotman Centre, on Colney Lane.

Part time: 37.5 hours per week

Main duties of the job

As post holder, your duties will include:

  • Primary screening and rapid review of liquid based cervical cytology preparations and reporting of negative and inadequate samples.
  • Clerical procedures associated with liquid based cervical cytology, to include sample registration, scanning of forms, entering own negative and inadequate reports on the database for routine cervical cytology and negative reports for Primary HPV screening.
  • Assisting in the specimen reception - checking forms, retrieving and preparing vials for HPV testing.
  • Assisting in the laboratory with routine technical procedures associated with liquid based cervical cytology including operation of the T5000/T2000 processor, staining and mounting as required.
  • Participation in internal and external quality assessment including the National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP) EQA scheme.

Job description

  • Checking forms, retrieving and preparing vials for HPV testing.
  • Routine technical procedures associated with liquid based cervical cytology including operation of the T5000/T2000 processor, staining and mounting as required.
  • Participation in internal and external quality assessment including the National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP) EQA scheme.
  • Participation in in-house training, CPD or CEC and a formal triennial update course.
  • Keep up to date with NHSCSP documentation, health and safety requirements, and relevant scientific literature and Trust policies.
  • To participate in annual appraisal and complete Trust mandatory training as appropriate.
  • To assist in histopathology under histology senior staff supervision
  • To carry out other duties as requested by senior staff as appropriate.
