Job summary

Working within the Quality and Safety Directorate, you will support the Team Manager, Claims in the effective management of Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Claims. Managing your own caseload, you will investigate complex claims, assess risk and liability, liaise with legal representatives and clinical teams, and ensure cases are progressed in line with legal requirements and organisational policies.

You will play a key role in identifying learning from claims, promoting a culture of openness and continuous improvement, and ensuring that lessons are shared across services to reduce future clinical and financial risk.

Working closely with clinicians, managers and external partners, you will provide specialist advice, contribute to policy development, support training and education, and help prepare reports for senior leaders and governance forums.

The successful candidate will be highly organised, able to manage competing priorities and complex information, and committed to delivering high standards of patient safety, quality and service improvement. This role is well suited to an experienced legal services, claims, governance or risk professional who can influence change and support the delivery of safe, effective care.

Main duties of the job

o Support and update the Team Manager - Claims in the day to day management of Clinical Negligence, Personal Injury Claims and Inquests to ensure that claims are managed in accordance with Health Board's policies, and in accordance with Welsh Office Circular Welsh Health Circular (97) 17 and the Civil Procedure Rules or

o Manage a caseload of Inquests, from commencement to conclusion, liaise directly with the Coroner's Office, support staff, draft and amend witness statements, action plans and work to strict deadlines.

o Prepare staff who are called to give evidence and inform and guide staff on Inquest process and to attend Inquests, and report back to senior staff the outcome of inquests and advise on remedial action if required.

o Provide expert legal advice on medico-legal issues e.g. consent on a frequent basis to staff at all levels in the organisation, including very senior managers and Executive Directors

o Ensure that lessons from Claims are identified and addressed by senior members of staff and escalate when necessary to senior members of staff e.g. Medical Director.

o Inform and update the Team Manager - Claims in the production of reports for directorates and Claims Panel.

o Draft template letters for senior members of staff and letters for Chief Executive.

o Work closely and collaboratively with other members of the Concerns team, to facilitate an integrated and comprehensive response.
