Job summary

The post-holder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the postholder is absent.

The work of the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) is delivered across two sites (Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital). The postholder is expected to deliver care on both sites according to their agreed job plan and the need of the service.

The post-holder will be expected to provide general/core urology service and be part of the non-muscle invasive bladder cancer team. They would be expected to contribute to fast track and diagnostic clinics. Support and mentoring will be provided where required.

As part of the service's target to expand theatre usage and improve theatre utilisation, the postholder, with other consultants, will provide flexible theatre cover as part of their weekly programmed activities aimed at providing extra capacity to meet cancer and waiting time targets.

The post-holder with contribute to the on-call consultant rota including out of hours cover on a pro rata basis.

Applicants should have a CCT or be within twelve months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC's specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide high-quality, evidence-based urological care to patients referred to the Bristol Urological Institute, with particular responsibility for general/core urology and the management of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. They will undertake outpatient clinics, diagnostic and surveillance cystoscopy, day-case and inpatient procedures, and elective operating appropriate to their agreed job plan and areas of expertise. The post-holder will work closely with colleagues across the BUI to ensure effective continuity of care and timely access to appropriate investigation and treatment.

Job description

The post holder will contribute to the non-muscle invasive bladder cancer service and the wider urological cancer pathway, including the assessment and management of patients with suspected and established bladder cancer. They will participate in relevant multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to the development of high-quality, patient-centred bladder cancer pathways. The post holder will also contribute to fast-track and diagnostic clinics. Appropriate support and mentoring will be provided where required, particularly in relation to the development of specific aspects of the post.

The post holder will undertake operative urology and contribute flexibly to the delivery of additional theatre capacity. As part of the BUIs programme to maximise theatre utilisation and improve access to surgery, the post-holder will participate in flexible theatre cover within their programmed activities. This will support the delivery of cancer and waiting-time targets and allow the service to respond to changing clinical demand.

The post holder will participate on the consultant on-call rota, including out-of-hours responsibilities, on a pro-rata basis. They will provide senior clinical leadership and decision making for patients under their care and, when undertaking on call will support the wider urology service across the relevant BUI sites.

The post-holder will be expected to work collaboratively with consultant colleagues, residents, nursing, administrative and allied health professional teams and other clinical services to ensure safe, effective and efficient patient care. They will contribute to service development, clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities within the service and will be expected to participate in the development and implementation of departmental and Trust policies and clinical pathways. It is expected that the post holder will be involved with departmental leadership roles.

The BUI is a major teaching and training centre, and the post-holder will contribute to the education and supervision of undergraduate medical students, postgraduate trainees and other members of the multidisciplinary team. There will be opportunities to contribute to research, innovation and academic activity within the Institute, and the post-holder will be encouraged to develop areas of clinical or academic interest in keeping with the needs of the service.

The post-holder will undertake duties at both Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital in accordance with their agreed job plan and the requirements of the service. They will contribute to the continued development of an integrated urology service across both sites and will support the delivery of consistent standards of clinical care throughout the BUI.
