As an ACP, you willdemonstrate safe, autonomous, and evidence-based clinical decision-making, working collaboratively with Emergency Department consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality patient-centred care.

The successful candidate will be responsible for undertaking comprehensive patient assessments, applying advanced diagnostic reasoning, formulating treatment plans, and managing patient care across a wide range of acute presentations. You will play a key role in supporting patients throughout their emergency care journey whilst ensuring adherence to Trust policies, procedures, and professional standards.

Excellent communication, organisational, and time management skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively under pressure in a busy clinical setting.

Beyond direct patient care, you will be an influential leader in service development and quality improvement. You will contribute to education, research, audit, and innovation initiatives, helping to shape and enhance the future delivery of emergency care services. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on patient outcomes while supporting the continued development of the Emergency Department and the wider organisation.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work autonomously to deliver expert, patient-centred, evidence-based care, using advanced specialist knowledge and skills to meet the needs of their patient group. They will demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and resilience while providing senior clinical leadership and operational oversight within their specialty.

Key responsibilities include managing patient flow and identifying appropriate escalation, de-escalation, or alternative care pathways; contributing to specialist education programmes; and providing clinical supervision, teaching, and support to multidisciplinary team members, including Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) at all stages of development.

The role may also involve managing and developing ACP staff through recruitment, appraisal, performance management, and retention activities. Additionally, the postholder will address complaints and concerns, promote learning from incidents, and lead or contribute to quality improvement initiatives, service development, research, and audit activities to enhance patient care and service delivery.

The Emergency Department at Leicester Royal Infirmary is one of the busiest in the UK, delivering high standards of care and performance to a diverse patient population. Our ambition is to become one of the country's leading providers of acute and emergency care over the next five years, making this an exciting time to join our team. In 2014 we invested in a modern integrated urgent and emergency care facility, bringing together the Emergency Department and key admission services within a single clinical environment.

The adult Emergency Department includes a dedicated main entrance, initial assessment area, minor injuries and illnesses service, majors department, and resuscitation facilities. These are supported by an extensive range of same-site services, including the Acute Medical Unit, Acute Care Bay, Acute Frailty Unit, and Emergency Decisions Unit, enabling patients to receive streamlined, high-quality care throughout their emergency care journey. Education and professional development are at the heart of our department.

We have a dedicated Education Team consisting of a Lead Consultant, two Registrars, and an Education Administrator, whose collective focus is to maintain and continually enhance our strong reputation for training and development. As an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, you will have access to a comprehensive programme of educational opportunities designed to support your ongoing professional growth. These include case-based discussion (CBD) sessions, simulation training within our dedicated in-house simulation suite, practical skills training, and a structured teaching programme delivered throughout the year. Our educational programme is continuously shaped by staff feedback to ensure it remains relevant and responsive to learning needs. In addition, fortnightly themed teaching sessions provide focused learning on key emergency medicine topics, followed by simulation exercises and opportunities to demonstrate and sign off competencies, supporting both clinical excellence and career progression.
