Job summary

Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship - August 2027 Two 12-month post-CCT fellowship positions are available from August 2027. We are looking for enthusiastic radiologists wishing to develop advanced subspecialty expertise in Musculoskeletal Radiology within a busy tertiary teaching hospital environment. The Liverpool MSK Imaging Fellowship offers broad experience across the spectrum of adult musculoskeletal radiology, with particular emphasis on developing the skills and confidence required for independent consultant practice. A particular strength of the fellowship is hands-on experience in MSK intervention. Fellows have the opportunity to develop their skills in diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound-guided procedures, image-guided biopsy and fluoroscopic intervention, alongside more advanced CT-guided procedures. One session each week is protected for research, with fellows expected to complete at least one project suitable for peer-reviewed publication during the fellowship year. Opportunities are also available to become involved in audit, quality improvement, teaching and presentation of work at national and international meetings. The fellowship is based principally across theLiverpool University Hospitals. The programme is designed to provide a supportive transition from radiology training to independent MSK consultant practice, while allowing fellows to develop particular areas of subspecialty interest during the year.

Main duties of the job

The successful fellows will work as integral members of the MSK radiology team, developing advanced skills in diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal radiology with appropriate consultant supervision and increasing independence throughout the year. Key duties will include:

• Reporting a broad range of inpatient and outpatient MSK imaging, including complex orthopaedic, sports, rheumatological and tumour cases.
• Performing diagnostic MSK ultrasound and a range of image-guided procedures, including therapeutic injections and bone and soft tissue biopsy, with opportunities to gain experience in more advanced CT-guided and spinal interventions.
• Participating in specialist orthopaedic, rheumatology and soft tissue sarcoma multidisciplinary meetings.
• Contributing to the teaching and supervision of radiology trainees and to the department's regular MSK educational programme.
• Participating in audit, quality improvement and clinical governance activities.
• Undertaking MSK research during dedicated protected research time, with the expectation of completing at least one project suitable for peer-reviewed publication.
• Contributing to the wider clinical work of the MSK radiology service while progressively developing the skills required for independent consultant practice.

Job description

Fellows work closely with a team of experienced consultant MSK radiologists and are exposed to a varied caseload encompassing orthopaedic and sports imaging, rheumatology and soft tissue tumours.

Providing exposure to both complex tertiary hospital practice and a high-volume elective orthopaedic service. Fellows have access to modern cross-sectional imaging facilities and established MSK ultrasound and interventional services across the sites.

This includes experience in spinal intervention for pain management and involvement in selected MSK cryoablation cases. Fellows are encouraged to participate actively in the department's multidisciplinary practice, with access to a range of specialist orthopaedic and rheumatology meetings as well as the regional soft tissue sarcoma service. This provides valuable experience of how complex imaging findings influence clinical and surgical decision-making.
