Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow to join the Paediatric Gastroenterology team at Evelina London Children's Hospital, part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

The Paediatric Gastroenterology service provides multidisciplinary care for children and young people with a wide range of acute and chronic gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders, including children requiring long-term parenteral nutrition. The service also provides a range of specialist diagnostic investigations including endoscopy, pH impedance, anorectal and oesophageal manometry and bowel transit studies.

The post provides an excellent opportunity for a doctor with broad experience in general paediatrics to develop further experience in paediatric gastroenterology within a specialist children's hospital and multidisciplinary team.

The appointment is for 6 months, with the possibility of extension. The post is based at Evelina London Children's Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of the Paediatric Gastroenterology team and will be involved in the day-to-day management of children admitted under the service, including both acute and elective patients.

Key responsibilities include managing patients with complex gastroenterological and nutritional conditions; providing gastroenterology advice and support to General Paediatrics and Paediatric Emergency services under consultant guidance; providing liaison support for children under other specialties with gastroenterological problems; and contributing to the management of complex patients referred from PICU.

The post holder will attend outpatient clinics under consultant supervision and participate in endoscopy lists, with opportunities to develop endoscopy experience where appropriate. They will also supervise junior medical staff on the wards and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical audit and quality improvement.

The post includes participation in the relevant out-of-hours rota.

Job description

The post holder will, together with colleagues, contribute to the delivery of a high-quality Paediatric Gastroenterology service at Evelina London Childrens Hospital.

Responsibilities will include:

• Day-to-day management of acute and elective Paediatric Gastroenterology patients.
• Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children and young people with gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders.
• Management of complex patients referred from or requiring input from PICU.
• Providing specialist gastroenterology advice and support to General Paediatrics and Paediatric Emergency services under consultant supervision.
• Providing liaison input for patients under other specialties who develop gastroenterological problems.
• Attending Paediatric Gastroenterology outpatient clinics under consultant supervision.
• Attending endoscopy lists, with opportunities to gain further experience in endoscopy where appropriate.
• Supervising and supporting junior medical staff working on the wards.
• Maintaining appropriate continuing clinical responsibility for patients under the post holders care, with appropriate supervision and delegation.
• Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
• Participating in clinical audit, quality improvement, clinical governance, guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management.
• Participating in departmental educational activities, including multidisciplinary meetings and other relevant educational meetings.
• Participating in the relevant out-of-hours rota.
• Undertaking other duties appropriate to the grade and nature of the post as required by the service.

The successful candidate will be expected to work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team and demonstrate good communication, leadership and organisational skills. Full GMC registration with a licence to practise and comprehensive clinical experience in general paediatrics are essential; MRCPCH or equivalent and previous experience in paediatric gastroenterology are desirable.

The Paediatric Gastroenterology service is based at Evelina London Children's Hospital, part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

The service provides specialist multidisciplinary assessment and management for children and young people with acute and chronic gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders. The team includes consultant paediatric gastroenterologists, clinical fellows, clinical nurse specialists, dietitians, psychology and GI physiology, working together to provide comprehensive care for children and their families.

The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across Paediatric Gastroenterology and the wider Evelina London Children's Hospital, including General Paediatrics, Paediatric Emergency Medicine, PICU and other specialist services.

The department supports continuing professional development, with opportunities to participate in departmental and multidisciplinary meetings, teaching, audit and quality improvement.
