Job summary

The Urology service has links with neighbouring specialist cancer teams including University Hospitals Birmingham and the Wye Valley NHS Trust as part of the Urology Area Network. The Worcestershire Urology Specialist MDT is normally attended by 2-3 Oncologists, 2 Consultant Radiologists, a Pathologist, and all of the key members of the Urology clinical team. Videoconferencing with sub-specialist MDTs in adjacent Centre is also available. Urology services in the West Midlands are currently undergoing a comprehensive review with proposals around Clinical Alliances between providers under consideration. It is an exciting time to join the Urology department within Worcestershire, as we progress through the Trusts Clinical Services strategy. The trust will soon be replacing existing theatre infrastructure with a new 4 operating department complex housing ultraclean-laparoscopic enabled and robotic suites. Novel surgical techniques for treatment of BPH are to be implemented in addition to enhanced community Urology services, delivered in collaboration with our system partners. The ongoing reconfiguration of Surgical Services will deliver co-location of elective pelvis specialties Hospital: Urology,at the Alexandra Urogynaecology, Colorectal Surgery & Gynaecology. The high degree of service interdependency and collaboration between these specialties delivers an opportunity to realise our vision of delivering a Centre of Excellence for Urology & Pelvic surgery.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will offer high quality day to day care to Urology and General Surgery patients at Alexandra Hospital Redditch, and deliver a first class clinical service to include activities equivalent to Middle Grade/Registrar level. They will offer high quality day to day care of patients and deliver a first class clinical service to include outpatient/diagnostic clinics, day case theatre procedures, elective theatre activity, inpatient care as required. There may be exciting opportunities to support the initiation of our Robotic Surgery program through tableside assistance with training as required. The post holder(s) will be required to participate in an on call commitment. The post holder(s) will have a continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge. This will include responsibility for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and wider administration for the department. The Trust may consider evening working (e.g. three session theatre days) as scheduled activity and may also wish to reach agreement with the individual about the possibility of future scheduling of routine work on a Saturday with other colleagues in the Urology Department. The post holder will undertake professional supervision and management of the junior medical staff.

This job description, together with the Capabilities Framework, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to:

provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary team in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patient's home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and rotas may be revised in due course.

be responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in their charge and personal performance of clinical duties.

provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.

attend Consultant ward rounds and triage ward referrals.

prepare patients for planned treatment and procedures, including post-operative care as required.

provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care, including discharge summaries.

attend multi-disciplinary meetings where requested, which may be cross county and cross site.

collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trust's and departmental objectives.

provide professional supervision, training and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, assessment and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally as appropriate.

participate in the middle grade on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with colleagues in post.

if undertaking non-resident on-call duties, attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. You must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.

participate in clinical audit as part of quality improvement activity under local arrangements.

commit to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by a trust approved appraiser.

be responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust. It is mandatory for all Specialists to keep up to date with evidence based practice.

be responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as Duties of a Doctor, Good Medical Practice, & the GMC Performance Procedures.
