Job description

Main Purpose of the RoleThe Paramedic will provide safe, effective and professional clinical care to patients with a wide range of medical conditions and injuries. The role involves assessing patients, providing appropriate treatment, making clinical decisions and arranging transportation or onward care where required.

Paramedics may work in a variety of environments, including patients' homes, GP practices, public places, hospitals and other healthcare settings. They may work as part of a two-person ambulance crew or independently using an appropriate response vehicle.

Key Responsibilities

• Undertake comprehensive clinical assessments and obtain patient consent where possible.
• Provide appropriate emergency and non-emergency treatment based on the patient's condition.
• Resuscitate and stabilise patients when required.
• Manage airways, severe bleeding and other life-threatening conditions.
• Administer medication, oxygen and intravenous fluids within the individual's scope of practice.
• Use clinical equipment such as defibrillators, ventilators, pulse oximeters and other approved medical equipment.
• Perform appropriate clinical procedures, including cannulation and endotracheal intubation where trained and authorised.
• Monitor patients and recognise changes in their condition.
• Determine whether hospital admission is required and identify the most appropriate destination or onward care.
• Safely treat, refer or discharge patients who do not require hospital admission where clinically appropriate.
• Provide clear clinical handovers and accurate patient records.
• Liaise with doctors, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, ambulance services, police, fire and other emergency services.
• Communicate professionally with patients, relatives, carers, colleagues and members of the public.
• Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
• Support and supervise student paramedics and new members of staff where required.
• Provide clinical advice to patients and colleagues when appropriate.

Vehicles, Equipment and Operational Duties

• Drive company vehicles for which the employee is appropriately trained and authorised, in accordance with relevant legislation, company procedures and the Highway Code.
• Complete vehicle and equipment checks as required.
• Maintain vehicles, equipment and stations in a clean, safe and operational condition.
• Complete all required inspection and maintenance documentation.
• Assist other healthcare professionals with patient care when required.

Professional Development

• Maintain current HCPC registration and practise within the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for Paramedics.
• Maintain an appropriate scope of practice.
• Complete all mandatory and statutory training required by the company.
• Undertake continuing professional development (CPD).
• Participate in training, mentoring and development of colleagues where required.
• Work with management to identify and address individual learning and development needs.

Confidentiality and Information Governance

• Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection Act, Caldicott principles and company policies.
• Handle patient and business information securely and appropriately.
• Comply with relevant Information Governance and Freedom of Information requirements.

Health, Safety and Risk Management

• Follow all company Health & Safety policies, procedures and safe working practices.
• Report accidents, incidents, near misses and identified risks promptly through the company's reporting system.
• Participate in risk assessments and actions designed to reduce risk.
• Attend mandatory Health & Safety training.
• Take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of patients, colleagues and members of the public.
• Support a workplace where health and safety is embedded in everyday practice.

• Safeguard children and vulnerable adults encountered during the course of your duties.

• Follow current Infection Prevention and Control guidance and company procedures.
• Comply with Hand Hygiene and Personal Protective Equipment requirements.

• Take appropriate measures to prevent healthcare-associated infections.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

• Current HCPC registration as a Paramedic.
• Recognised Diploma or BSc in Paramedicine.
• Completion of the required NQP period.
• Appropriate emergency/blue-light driving qualification, such as CERAD or equivalent.
• Appropriate driving entitlement in accordance with company requirements.
• Satisfactory Enhanced DBS clearance.
• Ability to successfully complete all required clinical and driving training.
• Willingness to undertake mandatory training and maintain ongoing CPD.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, ideally gained through experience working with patients, customers or members of the public.

Desirable Qualifications

• C1 driving entitlement.
• Level 4 Coaching and Mentoring qualification.
• BSc in Paramedicine.
• Additional clinical or professional qualifications, such as Mental Health, Advanced Practice, Advanced Assessment, Prescribing, Counselling or other relevant areas of practice.
