Job summary

We are seeking a qualified, skilled and motivated Orthopaedic Practitioner to join our multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will hold the British Orthopaedic Association Casting Certificate and demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, delivering high standards of care through expert assessment, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making.

The Norfolk & Norwich University NHS Hospitals Trust serves a population of 822,500 people. The orthopaedic department is a busy regional trauma centre and forward-thinking department offering a range of elective and trauma care to the local community. We have a team of orthopaedic surgeons, some with international recognition in their specialities. Patients are cared for on 2 dedicated orthopaedic wards and within a dynamic outpatient department, where 8,500 orthopaedic procedures, 54,000 outpatient appointments and 4,500 pre-admission appointments are undertaken annually, with projected numbers expected to increase.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, enthusiastic and keen to learn.

Applications from candidates without relevant qualifications/experience will be considered in a training post, however they will be appointed under annexe 21 pay structure (Agenda for Change) for the duration of maximum two-year training programme and successful completion.

Main duties of the job

As post holder you will work with all members of the Orthopaedic Department clinical team maintaining high standards of patient care under the direction of the Department Lead. To work in accordance with the principles laid down by the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and relevant Trust Policies

The post holder must possess in-depth clinical and technical knowledge in the application and removal of a wide range of casts, splints, and braces. The role requires experience in Orthopaedic outpatient and acute trauma settings, including experience supporting paediatric and adult patients across multiple departments such as Emergency, Theatres, Wards, and Therapy Services.

The practitioner must be able to work autonomously, demonstrating sound clinical judgement, and independently managing the assessment, planning, and implementation of care.

The position can also be a development opportunity to become a Plaster technician/Orthopaedic Practitioner. It is expected that the training will be completed within 24 months from start date. The post will initially be on a 1-year fixed term contract with the continuation of extending to a further 2nd year on passing internal competency-based assessments, then if extended 2nd year of a fixed term contract and successfully passing the British Casting Certificate then the post will be made substantive.

Job description

• Ensure practice is in accordance with the BOA Code of Professional Conduct and work within limits of competence.
• To have successfully completed the BOA casting course
• Maintain a high standard of patient care applying evidence-based practice.
• Maintain competence in all aspects of casting and cast care. Including application, maintenance and removal of orthopaedic appliances, slings, splints and braces.
• To conduct aseptic techniques and be able to clean and dress wounds; remove sutures and staples as required.
