Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experiencedAdvanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP)to join our Acute Oncology Service.

We are looking for an autonomous advanced practitioner with strong medical/oncology experience who is passionate about improving care for patients presenting with acute complications of cancer, cancer treatment or suspected new malignancy.

Working as a senior clinical member of the Acute Oncology multidisciplinary team, the ACP will provide expert assessment, advice and advanced clinical support to Emergency Department, acute medical and wider clinical teams caring for patients with known or suspected cancer.

The role will strengthen joint working across Acute Oncology, acute and emergency care, oncology and cancer site-specific services, supporting timely clinical decision-making, investigation, treatment and onward referral.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of new ways of working, including opportunities to strengthen outpatient assessment and follow-up, helping to ensure people affected by cancer receive timely specialist input and are cared for in the right place, by the right team, at the right time.

Main duties of the job

About You

You will be an experienced registered healthcare professional with significant experience in oncology and/or acute cancer care.

You will have completed an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice or equivalent recognised advanced practice qualification and hold an independent prescribing qualification appropriate to your professional background.

You will demonstrate advanced clinical assessment, clinical reasoning and decision-making skills and the ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively with medical, nursing and multidisciplinary teams.

This is an opportunity to join a developing Acute Oncology Service as a senior clinical practitioner, working within the established multidisciplinary and service leadership structure.

The postholder will use advanced clinical practice to strengthen specialist Acute Oncology support across acute care while contributing to the development and evaluation of new models of care that improve coordination, pathways and patient experience.

Job description

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner will:

• Work autonomously at advanced practice level within the Acute Oncology Service.
• Provide expert Acute Oncology assessment, advice and advanced clinical support to teams caring for patients with known or suspected cancer.
• Support Emergency Department and acute medical teams with complex clinical decision-making, investigation and management planning.
• Undertake advanced clinical assessment and formulate differential diagnoses to inform recommendations and onward management.
• Request and interpret appropriate diagnostic investigations and prescribe independently within their scope of practice.
• Recognise oncological emergencies and provide expert input to support timely investigation, treatment and escalation.
• Strengthen collaborative working between Acute Oncology, acute medicine, emergency care, oncology and cancer site-specific teams.
• Support timely navigation, referral and escalation to the most appropriate cancer or specialist pathway.
• Support opportunities for admission avoidance, timely discharge and appropriate specialist follow-up.
• Contribute to the development and evaluation of outpatient assessment, review and follow-up pathways and other innovative models of Acute Oncology care.
• Provide advanced clinical expertise, education and professional support to healthcare professionals caring for patients with acute oncology needs.
• Contribute to quality improvement, audit, education, research and service development in line with the four pillars of advanced clinical practice.
