Job summary

The Southern Gambling Service, SGS is one of 15 regional NHS gambling services in the UK, covering a population of 9.4 million people in the South East region. It was established in September 2022 and has expanded through staged roll out. Through secured NHS funding, we are now expanding on our staff base to reach a higher throughput of service used across the region requiring assessments and treatments of gambling disorder. The physical base of the team is at the College Keep- College Keep 4-12 Terminus Terrace, Southampton, SO14 3DT, with the majority of the teams' activities taking place online. This role is for 15hours per week.

The SGS has also a strong research compass, as well as an industrious clinical audit, service evaluation, Quality and Improvement, agenda which has been nationally recognised in developing effective and inclusive programs to improve the NHS service in collaboration with Lived-experience advisory group.

The service will operate from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. There are options to run therapy online outside of these hours if a post-holder and other staff desired to do so. Initial treatment options offered to patients would comprise evidence-based psychotherapy typically involving six therapy sessions and/or consideration of pharmacotherapy with dosage titration as appropriate. Therapy will comprise a mix of group and one-to-one psychotherapy formats, depending on clinical need.

Main duties of the job

The Specialty Doctor will work in an effective partnership with the team medical clinical leader and other senior clinicians in the service to:

1. Support the MDT in timely completion of specialised clinical assessments for people who are referred to the SGS to provide a diagnostic formulation and treatment plan

2. Provide medical input to MDT discussions for allocation of treatment pathways

3. Contribute to pharmacological treatment pathway for treatment initiation and follow-up, as well as prescription management

4. Act as professional liaison for advice on management of service users professionally referred to the SGS while under secondary mental health services

5. Where appropriate, undertake brief psychological treatments under the supervision of the senior psychological team.

The Specialty doctor will additionally support the team to work in line with agreed pathways, policies and guidelines, with a focus on delivery of outcomes and may undertake clinical audit and service evaluations under the support of the clinical leads. Where appropriate ensure there is effective training, ongoing professional development and professional supervision for all staff. Where appropriate support the team to use data and information to deliver against the contract and ensure quality of services.
