There is an exciting opportunity to join the department of Anaesthesia & Critical Care at The Christies main site in Withington, Manchester as a Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia and Critical Care.The post complements a team of 24 Consultants in Anaesthesia and/or Critical Care, 7 SAS Doctors, 3 fellows and 2 trainees & 1 ANP.The ideal candidate must have completed their Foundation programmes (or equivalent) and ideally will have experience of emergency medicine, surgery or anaesthesia training at core level.The post is particularly suitable post for doctors considering careers in ICM, anaesthesia or other acute specialities.The successful candidate will gain valuable experience working within an integrated oncological critical care service, led by a dedicated Critical Care consultant team, delivering high quality patient care.Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of commencement is required

Main duties of the job

This role provides senior cover on the OCCU medical rota. This is a resident rota covering the critical care unit and management of critically unwell patients throughout the hospital during the day. You will be supported by a senior, airway trained registrar on-site.The successful candidate will be based on the Oncology Critical Care Unit (OCCU) which is a state-of-the-art eight-bedded facility. The eight bedded unit supports the care of all the patient's undergoing treatment at The Christie's Withington site, the unit delivers around 600 patient episodes per year; 60% of which are surgical.

The post holder will provide resident medical cover for the Oncological Critical Care Unit (OCCU). The role requires the post holder to provide support for the Cardiac Arrest, Outreach and Acute Pain Teams at The Christie, under the supervision of a consultant.Although not a recognised teaching post, we will look to cater learning and teaching opportunities to the successful candidate based on their individual career aspirations and goals.The critical care service complements a comprehensive range of cancer specialties including surgical, clinical, medical, and haematological oncology

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe medical establishment currently provides 24 Consultants in Anaesthesia and/or Critical Care, 7 SAS Doctors, 3 fellows and 2 trainees, 1 ANP.

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input to the Oncological Critical Care Unit (OCCU) and support for the Cardiac Arrest, Outreach and Acute Pain Teams at The Christie. Additionally, the post will offer regular time tabled supervised sessions in clinical Anaesthesia, and time for supportive activities such as audit and research.

• Administration:

Maintain accurate clinical documentation and handoversParticipate in MDT meetings and departmental audit cycles

• Teaching

Contribute to in-house anaesthetic teaching and education of resident doctors and medical students.Opportunity to assist in regional teaching programmes.

• Research

Engage in national and local research/audit projects, such as NELA and PQIP.Support the design and analysis of quality improvement initiatives.

• Communication and working relationships

Work collaboratively with the OCCU Team, Outreach, theatre staff, surgeons, and acute pain team.Communicate effectively with patients and carers, especially in complex cancer care settings.

• Governance, quality and risk management

Adhere to Trust policies and GMC guidance on professional standardsParticipate in clinical governance meetings, incident reviews and morbidity and mortality meetings where appropriate.

Continuing Professional DevelopmentThe Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Role PlanningThe role will include an average approximately 40 hours/week of clinical duties in CCU and theatres. Shifts will include long days covering the critical care unit; in addition to short days on critical care or in theatres.

Over a 12 week rolling rota period, it is anticipated that the postholder will complete approximately:16 x 12.5 hour long day shifts on CCU (weekdays)14 x 10 hour short day shifts on CCU12 x 9.5 hour Theatre shifts

In addition to the above, it is anticipated that the postholder will receive approximately 2 hours of self development time per week to contribute to audit, research, training and quality improvement projects. There are also opportunities to attend and become involved with other anaesthetic-led services at the Christie; including CPET/Pre-op Clinics/Acute Pain Rounds/Chronic Pain clinics and interventions.

All post-holders will be given a named clinical and educational supervisor.

Currently, the job description does not include any night shifts or weekend working. However, it is highly anticipated that over the course of the contract period; the role will change, and the postholder will be required to participate in nights and weekend working, under the direct supervision of a senior doctor.

Weekend working will consist of clinical activities that are scheduled in advance and reviewed where required as work schedules are reviewed, taking account of service needs.

On call CommitmentsThe postholder will contribute to resident daytime and evening cover on the oncological critical care unit. This is a resident rota covering the critical care unit, and supporting the management of critically unwell patients throughout the hospital under the direct supervision of a consultant. The postholder will have to complete 16 resident long day shifts over the course of a 12-week period.

As stipulated above, currently, the job description does not include any night shifts or weekend working. However, it is highly anticipated that over the course of the contract period; the role will change, and the postholder will be required to participate in nights and weekend working, under the direct supervision of a senior doctor.
