Software Development Engineer in TestUniversity

About the Role

This role sits within IT Services as part of the AI & Automation (AAA) Programme, which is embedding AI and automation into how Queen Mary University of London operates. The AAA team delivers a portfolio of projects covering user-facing AI agents, integrations across university systems and new microservices that automate and improve day-to-day university processes.

About You

The Software Development Engineer in Test writes production-grade test code and builds the test infrastructure the AAA engineering team relies on. The postholder works alongside backend, frontend and AI engineers across the development lifecycle to keep testing built into how the team ships software.

This is a hands-on test development role. The postholder writes unit, integration and end-to-end tests for Go backends and React and Next.js frontends. The work goes beyond writing tests for the postholder's own code: the SDET sets the testing direction for the team and builds the infrastructure others depend on. The emphasis is on tests that catch real regressions and that other engineers can read, extend and trust. AI agent evaluation experience is welcome but not essential.

The postholder will hold a Bachelors Degree and/or equivalent experience

About the Department

The postholder will join a small, high-impact engineering team within IT Services, working alongside backend, frontend and AI engineers on a growing portfolio of AAA services. The postholder will partner with engineering throughout the lifecycle, embedding testing from feature design through to release and into in-life monitoring. The role reports to the Programme Director for AI Automation, Apps and Strategy.
