Are you a qualified Food and Public Safety Officer looking for your next challenge?

Join our Food & Public Safety Team and play a key role in protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of people across Leicester. Working in one of the UK’s most diverse and vibrant cities, you will regulate a wide range of food businesses, events, markets and public gatherings where food safety and public safety are paramount.

As an experienced Food Safety professional, you will undertake risk-based food hygiene and food standards inspections across restaurants, takeaways, manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, mobile food businesses and temporary premises. You will assess food safety management systems, including SFBB and HACCP, undertake sampling and investigate food complaints, food poisoning notifications, food incidents and emerging risks.

You will provide advice and guidance to businesses while taking proportionate enforcement action where standards are not met. The role will also involve supporting food and public safety arrangements at festivals, markets, sporting and cultural events, licensed premises and large-scale public gatherings, helping to identify and manage risks that could impact residents and visitors.

You will undertake investigations, gather evidence and prepare reports, statements and case files for formal enforcement action and potential prosecution. You may also represent the Service and Council at court, tribunals, appeals and other formal hearings. Working closely with colleagues across Regulatory Services, Public Health and partner organisations, you will contribute to an intelligence-led and risk-based approach to protecting both food safety and wider public safety.

What we’re looking for

You will be an experienced Food Safety professional with a recognised qualification, such as the Higher Certificate in Food Control awarded by EHRB/CIEH, CIEH Professional Food Safety qualification or equivalent, or an EHRB Certificate of Registration to practice as an Environmental Health Practitioner. An Environmental Health degree is also a requirement.

You will have demonstrable food safety competency and experience of undertaking inspections, assessing food safety management systems, conducting investigations and applying enforcement legislation. You will have sound knowledge of UK food safety legislation, including the Food Safety Act 1990, Food Hygiene Regulations and associated legislation, together with the ability to interpret legislation and technical guidance and apply it confidently and proportionately.

Experience of preparing evidence for legal proceedings, managing complex cases and working with partner agencies would be advantageous. You will also have excellent communication skills, professional judgement and the ability to assess risk and make confident decisions in challenging circumstances.
