Job summary

Working with the ADHD service, the Nurse Consultant is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, for adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The role combines expert clinical practice, service development, leadership, education, and consultation. The Nurse Consultant manages the complete care for their patients utilising expert knowledge base and clinical competence to support multi-professional teams, ensuring a high standard of clinical care. As a professional lead, the Nurse Consultant has the freedom and authority to act autonomously in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prescribing of patients with multi-dimensional problems and can work in or across all clinical settings, dependent on their area of expertise. Providing management and expert clinical advice and leadership to the Non-Medical Prescribers within the team as well as the wider MDT.

The Nurse Consultant will work alongside the service clinical lead, operational manager and consultant/medic to provide professional leadership to the nursing team. This will involve establishing partnerships internally and externally with a common purpose across agencies to impact on service development.

The Nurse Consultant provides specialist expertise in ADHD, ensures high-quality, evidence-based care, and acts as a resource for multidisciplinary colleagues, service users, families, and partner agencies.

Main duties of the job

Provide professional leadership to ADHD Team. Responsible for setting, implementing, and evaluation of standards of nursing practice. Independent NMP with demonstrable knowledge and skillS. Work autonomously providing care requiring complex assessment & treatment. Provide supervision to the NMPs. Provide nursing leadership skills in practice areas to motivate colleagues, improve standards and develop professional practice. Provide expert knowledge in ADHD. They will lead the development of initiatives and strategies utilising a high degree of personal autonomy. The post holder will provide expert clinical advice to all medical and nursing staff regarding the management and treatment of ADHD. Make critical judgements to inform clinical decision-making, recommendations and prescription. Use highly complex reasoning skills to provide diagnosis, treatment options and health promotion advice. Communicate highly sensitive and contentious information supporting patients and their carers to make informed decisions about their care. Initiate, optimise, and monitor ADHD medication in line with national guidelines. Have competence in the clinical skills required for the role e.g. prescribing, interpretation of blood and ECG results. To maintain clinical records in line with Trust policy and NMC standards. Provide senior-level oversight of clinical quality, safety, and risk management across ADHD pathways.

Job description

Working autonomously to manage their own workload and continue to develop and apply their knowledge and skills to a broad range of clinically and professionally challenging and complex situations.

They will demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making and both directly provide and supervise other members of the multi-disciplinary team in the delivery of expert care to patients within the defined clinical area.

The post holder will demonstrate critical thinking in the clinical decision-making process and work collaboratively with the multi-professional team to meet the needs of patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures, and providing nurse leadership as required within the clinical setting.

The post holder will provide direct patient care through appointments from diagnosis through to treatment.

The post holder will work alongside the service clinical lead, operational manager and consultant/medic to provide professional leadership to the nursing team. This will involve establishing partnerships internally and externally with a common purpose across agencies to impact on service development.

This will be in accordance with national drivers and local needs assessment to create an impact locally and nationally.

This will include the development of patient pathways where appropriate.
