Supporting Foot Health in Primary Care

Are you passionate about helping people maintain mobility, independence and quality of life through proactive foot health management?

We are looking for a dedicated Podiatrist to join our growing primary care podiatry services. Working within a dedicated primary care networks (PCN), you will provide high-quality foot health assessment and treatment, supporting patients with routine podiatry needs, preventative interventions and early identification of foot-related complications.

This is a part-time role to join our established and experienced team for 18.75 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

The Podiatrist will provide routine podiatry treatment, preventative foot health interventions and follow-up care within the primary care network and GP practices Patients will typically be referred into the service following triage, assessment or referral from the First Contact Podiatrist, GP or other appropriate healthcare professional.

The role focuses on routine podiatry interventions, preventative foot health care, diabetic foot screening, nail surgery services, patient education and the identification of patients requiring escalation to specialist services.

The post holder will work under the clinical leadership of the Lead FCP Podiatrist and contribute to the wider delivery of podiatry services across the PCN.

Job description

Clinical Practice

  • Assess and treat patients presenting with a range of routine podiatry and foot health needs
  • Deliver routine nail care and nail reduction procedures
  • Provide corn and callus management
  • Undertake basic diabetic foot screening and risk assessment in accordance with local protocols
  • Identify and appropriately escalate patients presenting with diabetic foot complications, infection, vascular compromise or other high-risk foot conditions in accordance with local pathways
  • Escalate patients presenting with undifferentiated, complex, high-risk or non-routine presentations to the Lead FCP Podiatrist or appropriate specialist service in accordance with local pathways
  • Deliver foot health education and self-management advice to patients and carers
  • Refer patients appropriately into specialist podiatry services, GP services and secondary care pathways following assessment and treatment
  • Recognise red flag presentations and escalate appropriately in line with local pathways and governance procedures
  • Promote mobility, independence and preventative foot health interventions
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records in accordance with HCPC, Royal College of Podiatry and Promni Health standards
  • Deliver care in accordance with evidence-based practice and professional guidelines

Service Delivery

  • Deliver podiatry clinics across designated Primary Care Network sites
  • Support the reduction of waiting times and improve patient access to podiatry services
  • Contribute to achievement of service activity and quality targets
  • Ensure efficient utilisation of clinical appointment capacity
  • Participate in service audits, quality improvement projects and service development initiatives

Team Working

  • Work collaboratively with GPs, Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Care Navigators, First Contact Practitioners and wider multidisciplinary teams
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision with the Lead FCP Podiatrist
  • Escalate clinical concerns and complex cases appropriately
  • Support a positive team culture and contribute to service improvement discussions
  • Share learning and best practice with colleagues

Professional Development

  • Participate in annual appraisal and personal development planning
  • Maintain an up-to-date CPD portfolio
  • Attend mandatory training and service-specific training programmes
  • Maintain HCPC registration and professional standards
  • Participate in clinical audits and reflective practice activities
