Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Fellowship at Specialist Registrar grade in General Surgery, delivered jointly by the University of Liverpool and Royal Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post offers an excellent opportunity for a surgical trainee to undertake high-quality clinical research within the Pancreas Research Group at the University of Liverpool, with the intention of supporting progression towards a PhD, subject to satisfactory progress. The successful candidate will contribute to the European Registry of Hereditary Pancreatic Disease programme and work within an established, well-supported research environment with a strong track record of publications, higher degree completion and external fellowship funding. Alongside the research programme, the postholder will participate in the general surgical on-call registrar rota at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and undertake limited clinical duties related to the research area. The role provides structured supervision, mentorship and postgraduate research training through the University of Liverpool, while maintaining clinical exposure within a busy tertiary NHS teaching hospital. The post is funded by Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, with salary aligned to the Specialist Registrar pay scale and appropriate on-call supplements.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

• Undertake clinical research within the Pancreas Research Group at the University of Liverpool.
• Contribute to the ongoing European Registry of Hereditary Pancreatic Disease programme.
• Work towards progression to a PhD, subject to satisfactory progress.
• Participate in the general surgical on-call registrar rota at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
• Undertake limited clinical service duties related to the area of research.
• Engage with postgraduate research training, supervision and mentorship through the University of Liverpool.
• Contribute to publications, academic outputs and wider national/international research activity where appropriate.

Job description

The post is a Clinical Research Fellowship at Specialist Registrar grade in General Surgery, based within the Pancreas Research Group at the University of Liverpool and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for undertaking clinical research as part of the ongoing European Registry of Hereditary Pancreatic Disease programme. The role is designed to support progression towards a PhD, subject to satisfactory progress, and will include structured supervision, mentorship and postgraduate research training through the University of Liverpool. The fellow will work within an established and well-funded research group with links to national bodies, including Cancer Research UK, Pancreatic Cancer UK, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the National Institute for Health Research. They will be expected to contribute to research activity, publications, higher degree work and engagement with relevant national and international research collaborations. In addition to the research element, the postholder will participate in the general surgical on-call registrar rota at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. They will also undertake limited clinical service duties related to the clinical area of research. The role offers an opportunity to maintain clinical exposure at specialist registrar level while developing academic, research and postgraduate skills within a major NHS teaching hospital and Russell Group university environment.
