Job summary

The Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor provides specialist advice, training, and support to managers, staff, and students across the Health Board to reduce manual handling and musculoskeletal risks and promote safe working practices. The post holder plays a key role in improving staff health, safety, wellbeing, and service efficiency through the application of manual handling and ergonomics principles in both clinical and non-clinical environments. They support compliance with health and safety legislation, the Core Skills for Health Framework, and the All-Wales Manual Handling Passport Scheme through training delivery, risk assessment, incident investigation, auditing, and expert guidance.

Main duties of the job

  • Plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate manual handling and ergonomics training programmes across the Health Board.
  • Produce training materials, presentations, lesson plans, and assessment resources.
  • Ensure training records are maintained and mandatory training requirements are achieved.
  • Provide expert advice on manual handling, people handling, ergonomics, and Display Screen Equipment (DSE).
  • Undertake complex ergonomic and manual handling risk assessments for staff and patients.
  • Advise on the selection and safe use of equipment and recommend workplace adaptations.
  • Support managers with safe systems of work and compliance with legislation and Health Board policies.
  • Investigate manual handling and ergonomic incidents, identifying root causes and recommending preventative actions.
  • Analyse incident, accident, sickness absence, and audit data to identify trends and risks.
  • Conduct manual handling and ergonomics audits across clinical and non-clinical settings.
  • Produce audit reports and support managers in implementing action plans.
  • Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of manual handling policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and provide line management support to Manual Handling Trainers .
