Job summary

The Orthogeriatric Specialty Doctor will deliver high-quality, patient-centred medical care to older adults admitted with fragility fractures and other orthopaedic conditions. Working as part of the Orthogeriatric and Trauma & Orthopaedic teams, the post holder will provide comprehensive geriatric assessment, peri-operative medical optimisation, management of frailty and complex comorbidities, and support rehabilitation and discharge planning.

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of the orthogeriatric service, helping to improve patient outcomes, reduce length of stay, and ensure effective multidisciplinary working across acute and community care pathways.

Main duties of the job

Provide high-quality pre-operative and post-operative medical care for older adults with fragility and periprosthetic fractures under consultant supervision. Undertake Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments (CGA) to optimise frailty, comorbidities and geriatric syndromes throughout the patient pathway. Work closely with Trauma & Orthopaedic, Anaesthetic and multidisciplinary teams to support timely surgery and improve patient outcomes. Participate in consultant-led ward rounds, assessing, investigating and managing orthogeriatric patients. Assess and manage falls risk, polypharmacy, cognitive impairment, delirium, osteoporosis and other age-related conditions in line with national guidance. Contribute to rehabilitation, discharge planning and care coordination, supporting safe and timely discharge in accordance with NHFD standards. Provide specialist medical advice to Trauma & Orthopaedic colleagues and contribute to secondary fracture prevention initiatives .Support teaching, supervision and development of junior staff and multidisciplinary colleagues. Participate in service development, audit, quality improvement, clinical governance and research activities. Maintain accurate clinical documentation, effective handover and compliance with GMC standards, Trust policies and national clinical guidance. This post does not include an on-call commitment
