Job summary
After a planned expansion of our list size in April 2026 we are seeking to appoint Practice Nurses, with opportunities available for part time employees.
The successful applicant will join a well-established team of dedicated and friendly multidisciplinary staff which includes 14 Nurse Practitioners.
The position would be suitable for applicants with a registered nursing qualification seeking to develop skills in autonomous clinical work.

Main duties of the job
Working alongside the rest of our nursing team you will be responsible for delivering practice nursing services to our patient population including monitoring of long-term conditions, health promotion and screening activities.
You will work collaboratively with our extremely supportive multi-disciplinary team to meet the needs of patients and provide nursing leadership as required.
Job description
The following are the core responsibilities of the Practice Nurse. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
Develop, implement and embed health promotion and wellbeing programmes
Implement and evaluate individual treatment plans for chronic disease patients
Identify, manage and support patients at risk of developing long-term conditions, preventing adverse effects on the patients health
Provide routine nursing care to patients as required in accordance with clinical based evidence, NICE and the NSF
Provide wound care to patients
Provide contraception advice
Perform cervical screening
Provide travel medicine services
Request pathology services as necessary
Process pathology results as required
Provide chronic disease clinics, delivering patient care as necessary, referring patients to secondary / specialist care as required
Maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with current legislation
Ensure read codes are used effectively
Maintain chronic disease registers
Chaperone patients where necessary
Prioritise health issues and intervene appropriately
Support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies
Recognise, assess and refer patients presenting with mental health needs
Implement vaccination programmes for adults and children
Support patients in the use of their prescribed medicines or over the counter medicines (within own scope of practice)
Liaise with external services / agencies to ensure the patient is supported appropriately (vulnerable patients etc.)
Delegate clinical responsibilities appropriately (ensuring safe practice and the task is within the scope of practice of the individual)
Support the clinical team with all safeguarding matters, in accordance with local and national policies
Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate.

James Alexander Family Practice is an innovative practice who appreciate the importance of encouraging personal interests and quality family life.
We have 6 salaried GPs and 14 Nurse Practitioners, all of whom are prescribers.
We have a strong nursing team with 4 Practice Nurses including a Lead Nurse and 5 Health Care Assistants.
Early in 2016 we went through extensive organisational changes to help us future proof our organisation and create efficiency savings and streamline services. This helped strengthen our non-clinical team, with our current non-clinical team working effectively providing high quality care and support to all our clinical staff and patients.
We have also complimented our strong clinical team with a dedicated Pharmacy team.
