Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, with flexibility required between 08:00 and 19:30 to meet service needs

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist (Breast) to join our Breast Care Service at The Wellington Hospital Outpatients.

This is an exciting opportunity for a registered nurse with specialist breast care knowledge and experience to provide expert clinical support to patients with benign and malignant breast conditions. You will play a pivotal role in supporting patients throughout their diagnostic, treatment and recovery journey, ensuring they receive high-quality, individualised and holistic care.

As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, you will act as a patient advocate and specialist resource, providing clinical expertise, education and psychological support to patients and their families.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

  • Act as a specialist for patients with breast conditions and breast cancer.
  • Provide expert clinical, emotional and educational support to patients and their families throughout the patient pathway.
  • Coordinate care and act as a key worker, ensuring continuity of care across services.
  • Attend and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, providing specialist nursing input into patient management plans.
  • Communicate treatment plans and MDT outcomes effectively to patients and relevant healthcare professionals.
  • Support patients before, during and following surgery and treatment.
  • Work collaboratively with breast surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe and effective care.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure compliance with professional and organisational standards.
  • Participate in service development, audit and quality improvement initiatives.

Job description

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for supporting patients throughout their illness, from pre-diagnosis onwards, so that the patient is well supported throughout. This is often referred to as a key worker.

They care for patients throughout their diagnosis and treatment. They take a key role in supporting the patients during their treatment and are an essential member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT). The Clinical Nurse Specialist is a critical and consistent contact point for patients who often will need to interact with different parts of the hospital in order to receive optimal treatment.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will;

  • Build trust with the physicians and patients through multidisciplinary care coordination.
  • Assist in educating patients about their disease so they can make informed decisions about their care.
  • Provide emotional support to the patient, family and caregivers.
  • Signpost patients to support networks, internally and externally.
  • Advocate for the patient in development of the treatment plan.
  • Manage a caseload within their own scope of practice, with support from the wider clinical team.
