We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Paediatric Phlebotomist to join our dedicated Paediatric team. This exciting role will involve leading and coordinating our Paediatric Phlebotomy Clinic, providing high-quality venepuncture services to infants, children and young people in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
You will work closely with nurses, play specialists and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure blood sampling procedures are carried out safely, effectively and with minimal distress. The role requires excellent communication skills, confidence working autonomously, and the ability to support children with anxiety, neurodiversity and complex needs.
The successful candidate will hold a recognised venepuncture qualification and have experience working with children and young people. Main Duties of the Job As the Paediatric Phlebotomist, you will provide a safe, compassionate and child-centred phlebotomy service for infants, children and young people attending South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust. You will be responsible for coordinating and running the Paediatric Phlebotomy Clinic, undertaking venous and capillary blood sampling, and ensuring specimens are appropriately documented and processed.
Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, including nurses, play specialists and clinical support staff, you will support children and families throughout their care, using effective communication and therapeutic approaches to minimise anxiety and distress. You will maintain accurate patient records, monitor stock and equipment, support colleagues undertaking venepuncture competencies, and contribute to service development, governance and quality improvement activities to ensure the delivery of a safe and effective service.
Job description
The Paediatric Phlebotomist will provide a safe, effective and child-centred phlebotomy service for infants, children and young people attending South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will coordinate and run the Paediatric Phlebotomy Clinic, undertake venous and capillary blood sampling, and support children and families throughout their care journey. Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, they will use age-appropriate communication and therapeutic approaches to minimise anxiety and distress, ensuring a positive experience for children, including those with additional needs and neurodiversity.
- Coordinate and deliver the Paediatric Phlebotomy Clinic.
- Perform venous and capillary blood sampling in infants, children and young people in line with Trust policies and procedures.
- Support children and families using effective communication, reassurance and appropriate therapeutic techniques.
- Ensure specimens are correctly labelled, documented and transported to the relevant laboratory in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate patient records using electronic patient systems.
- Monitor and maintain stock levels, equipment and cleanliness within clinical areas.
- Work collaboratively with nurses, play specialists, clinicians and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Support and supervise colleagues undertaking venepuncture competency training.
- Recognise and escalate concerns, emergencies or safeguarding issues appropriately.
- Maintain patient confidentiality, privacy and dignity at all times.
- Comply with Trust policies, mandatory training requirements, infection prevention and control standards, and health and safety procedures.
- Participate in appraisal, ongoing professional development, quality improvement and service development activities.
