Birmingham Children's Hospital is one of the largest dedicated children's cancer centres in the UK, receiving in the order of 250 new referrals each year; approximately 10% of UK childhood malignancies.

Main duties of the job

This is a new post created in recognition of increased activity in neuro-oncology and an ambition to build capacity to facilitate service development in the department. Although a keen interest in Neuro-Oncology is essential and previous experience welcomed, it is not a requirement and all interested applicants would be warmly considered. This post will provide support to the existing team of 4.9 WTE NHS consultant oncologists, 4 part-time academic colleagues (2 Professorial appointments and 2 Senior Lecturer), 1 part-time honorary NHS consultant and a part-time Specialty Doctor. The existing Oncology teams provides the full range of tertiary oncology services and have sub-specialty interest in neuro-oncology, general solid tumour oncology, TYA oncology, late-effects and retinoblastoma covering an extensive geographical area. The department has a varied research portfolio including a world-leading programme in functional imaging and metabolism for CNS tumours.

Job description

The post holder will be required to provide senior leadership and supervision of the diagnosis and treatment of children and young people referred into the neuro-oncology service through attendance at regular outpatient clinics and attendance at weekly MDT meetings. There will be a need to provide acute paediatric medical oncology cover for patients with solid and CNS tumours during hot service weeks and on-call. The post holder will oversee the day-day management of inpatient workload in collaboration with the junior medical team and nursing teams through participation in the departmental weekly on-service rota. The post-holder will work collaboratively with other members of the wider MDT. It should attract those with specialist training and experience in paediatric oncology, either in the UK or with equivalent training overseas. The successful applicant will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of expected completion of higher specialist training.
