  • This is a full-time post for a Consultant in Haematology (10.0 PA).
  • The appointee will work in collaboration with the wider Haematology team comprising of; two full time consultants, three speciality doctors, a junior clinical fellow, a rotational trainee, five clinical nurse specialists and dedicated administrative support.
  • This post will be an excellent opportunity for an individual to contribute to the continued development of our Haematology service and lead for either the transfusion or thrombosis service.

Main duties of the job

Outpatients workload

  • There are three outpatient clinics a week; two of which are general haematology with the potential for the third clinic being developed as specialist interest clinic.
  • One PA will be allocated for administration time as part of this 10 PA contract.
  • Attend the weekly haematology MDT and network meetings.

Laboratory Responsibilities

  • Contribute to providing timely reporting and authorisation of abnormal blood films referred by thelaboratory and bone marrows. This workload is shared between members of the consultant team
  • Deliver an interpretative and advisory service for haematology based on laboratory results, which is available to the whole health community.
  • Attend the monthly laboratory network meetings (minimum one consultant from each site required if clinical lead is not available).
  • Out of hours laboratory cover for all 3 sites (UHCW, GEH and SWFT) will be provided by the on-call consultant haematologist according to the network on call rota.

Job Plan

  • The job plan is an indicative example of a job plan. A formal job plan will be agreed between the post holder, colleagues and Clinical Director for Medicine soon within six months after commencement date and will be effective from that date. The job plan, a prospective agreement that sets out a Consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives, will be reviewed periodically. Annual consultant appraisals will be carried out as part of the national revalidation process.
  • The post holder will have access to secretarial support from a team of medical secretaries and administrative assistants. Along with radiology including MRI, CT and ultrasound service. The service also has access to pathology services. The balance between Direct Clinical Care (DCC) activities and Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA) will be agreed with the candidate as part of the initial job planning process. For a full time post it is anticipated that 8.5 programmed activities (PA) will be for DCC, and 1.5 PAs for SPA.
