Main duties of the job

We are seeking a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in glaucoma to join our friendly, supportive and forward thinking Eye Unit, with an anticipated start date of Nov or Dec 2026. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patient care by delivering high-quality, specialist glaucoma services within a collaborative multidisciplinary team known for its innovation and commitment to continuous improvement. We are looking for an enthusiastic clinician with expertise or a strong interest in glaucoma, excellent teamwork skills, and a passion for delivering outstanding patient-centred care.

You will:

  • Deliver expert care in the management of complex glaucoma cases- Undertake glaucoma clinics and surgical activity, including conventional surgery and MIGS- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to optimise patient outcomes- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the glaucoma service- Participate in the teaching and training of resident doctors, nurses, optoms and wider staff- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements in glaucoma care and surgical practice

Job description

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, rated Good by the CQC. We are seeking a motivated Consultant Ophthalmologist to join our dynamic Eye Unit.

You will work within an established multidisciplinary glaucoma team delivering a comprehensive service, including complex surgery and MIGS.

The Southampton Eye Unit is a purpose-built facility with modern dedicated outpatient departments, advanced imaging (including anterior segment OCT, Optos and digital slit lamps) and modern fully equipped ophthalmic theatres with state-of-the-art technology (including intraoperative OCT and 3D NGENUITY).

The service manages a large and diverse patient population, providing exposure to a wide range of complex glaucoma cases.We offer a strong commitment to learning and development, flexible working (subject to service needs), NHS pension, generous annual leave and excellent opportunities for career progression.
