Job summary
We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Practice Nurse to join our friendly team at Kings Medical Centre on a 9-month fixed-term contract to cover maternity leave, starting in January 2027.
There may also be an opportunity for a permanent position at the end of the maternity cover period, subject to the needs of the practice at that time.
We know that flexibility is important, so we are happy to discuss hours and working days with the right candidate.
You will be joining an established nursing team which includes a Lead Practice Nurse and three Healthcare Assistants, working alongside our wider clinical and administrative teams.

Main duties of the job
The role will include a range of Practice Nursing duties, which may include:
- Long-term condition management and reviews
- Cervical screening
- Childhood immunisations
- Adult and seasonal vaccinations
- Wound care and dressings
- Contraception reviews
- Health promotion and lifestyle advice
- Routine Practice Nursing procedures
- Supporting QOF and other clinical targets
About youPrevious Practice Nurse experience is essential for this role.
We are looking for someone who:
- Is a registered nurse with current NMC registration
- Has previous experience working as a Practice Nurse within General Practice
- Has experience in long-term condition management
- Is confident carrying out core Practice Nursing duties
- Has good communication and organisational skills
- Enjoys working as part of a team
- Has a friendly, professional and patient-focused approach
- Values teamwork and staff wellbeing
- Is able to work independently within their competencies

Job description
Long-Term Condition ManagementUndertake reviews and support the ongoing management of patients with long-term conditions, in accordance with individual competencies and practice protocols. This may include:
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- COPD
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hypertension
- Other long-term conditions appropriate to the post holder's training and experience
- Supporting the practice in achieving QOF and other relevant clinical targets
Treatment Room DutiesProvide a range of Practice Nursing services, which may include:
- Wound assessment, management and dressings
- Removal of sutures and clips
- Cervical screening
- Contraception reviews, where appropriately trained
- Blood pressure monitoring
- Urinalysis and specimen collection
- Injections and medicines administration
- ECGs, where required
- Health promotion and lifestyle advice
- Other routine Practice Nursing procedures within the post holder's competence
Anticoagulation / INR Monitoring
- Undertake INR testing and anticoagulation monitoring for patients prescribed warfarin
- Use INRstar to record results and support anticoagulation management in accordance with practice protocols and agreed clinical pathways
- Provide patients with appropriate advice regarding their anticoagulation treatment
- Identify and escalate abnormal or concerning results appropriately
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date anticoagulation records
- Work within own level of competency and relevant anticoagulation protocols at all times
Immunisations and Vaccinations
- Administer childhood immunisations in accordance with the national immunisation programme
- Administer adult vaccinations as appropriate
- Support and participate in the practice's seasonal influenza and other vaccination programmes
- Ensure vaccines are administered safely and appropriately under relevant Patient Group Directions (PGDs), Patient Specific Directions (PSDs) or other appropriate legal mechanisms
- Maintain accurate vaccination records
- Follow cold-chain procedures and report any concerns appropriately
Health Promotion and Prevention
- Provide patients with appropriate health promotion and lifestyle advice
- Support screening and prevention programmes
- Identify opportunities to promote healthy lifestyles during patient contacts
- Support patients to make informed decisions about their health and care
Clinical ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will:
- Work in accordance with current NMC professional standards
- Work within their own level of competence and scope of practice
- Maintain accurate, clear and contemporaneous clinical records
- Follow practice policies, protocols and clinical guidelines
- Recognise and respond appropriately to deteriorating or unwell patients
- Escalate clinical concerns to an appropriate clinician when required
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
- Ensure appropriate consent is obtained before undertaking procedures or treatment
- Maintain infection prevention and control standards
- Ensure equipment is used safely and report faults or concerns promptly
- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement work where appropriate
Team WorkingThe Practice Nurse will be an important member of our nursing and wider practice team and will be expected to:
- Work closely with the Lead Practice Nurse and three Healthcare Assistants
- Communicate effectively with GPs, nurses, HCAs, pharmacists, administrative and reception staff
- Support colleagues and contribute to a positive working environment
- Attend relevant practice, nursing and training meetings where required
- Share knowledge and experience with colleagues
- Raise concerns appropriately and contribute to identifying solutions
- Support new members of staff where appropriate

- Maintaining current NMC registration

- Only undertaking clinical duties for which they are appropriately trained and competent
