An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clinical Engineer to join BCHC developing Medical Devices Management Team.

We are seeking a motivated and innovative Clinical Engineer with significant experience in medical device management to provide specialist technical expertise across a diverse range of healthcare technologies. You will play a key role in supporting the safe and effective management of medical devices throughout their lifecycle, including equipment standardisation, evaluation, procurement, commissioning, maintenance oversight and technical risk assessment.

As the Trust's senior Clinical Engineer within the Medical Devices Team, you will provide expert advice on complex medical technologies, including network-connected medical devices, Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) and emerging digital health technologies. Working closely with clinical services, Digital, Procurement and external suppliers, you will help ensure medical devices remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose.

Main duties of the job

As the Band 7 Clinical Engineer, you will provide specialist clinical engineering expertise to support the safe, effective and compliant management of medical devices across Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Key responsibilities include leading medical device projects, providing expert advice on equipment lifecycle management, procurement, commissioning, maintenance oversight, standardisation and decommissioning. You will support the governance of network-connected medical devices, Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) and emerging healthcare technologies, ensuring compliance with MHRA guidance, relevant legislation and Trust policies.

The role includes undertaking technical risk assessments, supporting procurement and equipment evaluations, reviewing third-party maintenance provider performance, improving medical device asset data quality, and contributing to the development of the Trust's medical device database.

You will work collaboratively with clinical services, Digital, Procurement and external suppliers, providing specialist technical advice and supporting service improvement initiatives. The post holder will also develop technical training for the Medical Devices Team, contribute to the Trust's medical device governance programme, and deputise for the Medical Devices Lead when required.

Job description

The Band 7 Clinical Engineer will provide specialist clinical engineering expertise to support the safe, effective and compliant management of medical devices across Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will lead and support projects relating to medical device management, providing expert technical advice throughout the medical device lifecycle, including equipment evaluation, procurement, commissioning, maintenance oversight, decommissioning and replacement planning. They will work closely with clinical services, Procurement, Digital Services, Risk Management and external suppliers to ensure medical devices remain safe, reliable and compliant with regulatory requirements.

A key aspect of the role is supporting the governance of network-connected medical devices, Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), AI-enabled medical technologies and other emerging healthcare technologies. The post holder will contribute to technical risk assessments, review device connectivity requirements, support implementation of safety notices, and provide specialist advice on regulatory compliance and best practice.

The post holder will be responsible for reviewing technical information provided by third-party maintenance contractors, supporting improvements to the Trust's medical device asset database, analysing equipment performance data and identifying opportunities to improve quality, efficiency and value for money.

Working collaboratively across the Trust, the Clinical Engineer will contribute to medical device standardisation programmes, support equipment trials, evaluate new technologies and assist with the development of technical policies, procedures and guidance.

The role includes delivering technical training and competency support to members of the Medical Devices Team, providing expert advice to clinical and corporate teams, and contributing to the ongoing development of the Medical Devices Management Service. The post holder will also deputise for the Medical Devices Lead where appropriate and support the delivery of strategic objectives relating to medical device governance, patient safety and service improvement.

The successful candidate will be expected to travel across BCHC sites and community locations as required and will participate in continuing professional development to maintain specialist knowledge and technical competence.
