We are excited to offer a Trainee Band 5 Clinical Photographer opportunity to work in an award-winning department that is located in the Birmingham Dental Hospital. Providing Clinical, Non-clinical Photography, and supporting Video services to the staff of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and other external agencies.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, conscientious and motivated photographer who is able to demonstrate the ability to work both independently as well as within a multi-disciplinary team. Excellent communication and organisational skills are required with the ability to prioritise own workload, work unsupervised, and use own initiative to contribute to the efficient running of the department.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a funded postgraduate certificate in Clinical Photography, run by Staffordshire University.

Main duties of the job

  • Supporting the Tele-dermatology service in partnership with University Hospitals of Birmingham.
  • Responsible for delivering day to day operational cost effective, efficient clinical and allied section within the department, which provides a photographic, video, multimedia and graphicdesign service to Birmingham Dental Hospital and other agencies including the directorates ofBirmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust.
  • Contribute to the provision of a clinical photographic, audio-visual and information design service inline with modern imaging technology, which is responsive to the needs of clinicians, Trust staff andother health care professionals in their care of patients.
  • Participates in the development of services and CPD activities.
  • Consult with and provide advice to users of the service, ensuring that requests are understood andundertaken accurately.
  • Performs clinical duties, assesses and undertakes own workload of patients / clients and maintains associated records.

Job description

Clinical Photography

  • Provide photographic material of clinical cases that clinicians require as part of their diagnostic andtreatment records and which may also be required for teaching, research or publication.Responding to requests from clinical staff at the Dental Hospital, from Birmingham CommunityHealthcare NHS Trusts other directorates and also professionals from other agencies.
  • Clinical photography of patients in the studio, on clinicand at other sites. To perform specialist clinical photography including intra-oral dental photographyrequiring the accurate placement and control of lip retractors and mirrors in the patients mouth.
  • Undertake the photography of patients with non-accidental injury (NAI) or trauma and to undertakemedico-legal photography for the Trust, solicitors or police evidence. On rare occasion may berequired to attend court cases as an expert witness.
  • Photography of specimens, dentures and appliances following departmental technical operationalguidelines and the Trust cross infection policy.
  • To liaise with clinical staff ensuring a smooth flow of patients in the clinics.
  • To clearly explain the photographic procedure to patients, showing empathy and using goodinterpersonal skills to put patients at ease.
  • To respect patients privacy and to protect their dignity when asking patients to remove clothing inorder for clinical photographs to be taken.
  • Photography of operative procedures in the General Anesthetic Department and on Clinic.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot any routine technical problems with the photographic equipment andassociated computer software.
  • To assist in and undertake video filming in a safe manner, in clinical and non-clinical settings.
  • Assisting in arranging lighting and video equipment on location in both internal and externalenvironments.
  • Assist in keeping technical operational guidelines up to date.
  • Handle confidential clinical material according to the Trusts Consent Policy on Photographic andVideo Recording.
  • Guide clinical staff on the correct application of the Trusts Consent Policy on Photographic andVideo Recording.
  • Plan and prioritise own workload, comprising of a combination of tasks, in order to meet agreeddeadlines.

General Photography/videography

1. Consult with and provide advice to users of the service, ensuring that requests areunderstood, undertaken and costed accurately when preparing quotes for photographicand video assignments.

2. To undertake video filming in a safe manner. Arranging lighting and video equipment onlocation in both internal and external environments.

3. To provide quotes for clients for Photographic and Videography work.

4. To undertake public relations photography using own initiative in order to obtain highquality images.

5. To undertake the technical work within the reprographic section of the departmentensuring technical operational guidelines are followed. Providing quality control checksand ensuring work undertaken is of a satisfactory standard.

6. Produce colour accurate prints from digital files.

7. Support the provision of identity badges throughout the Trust, including thephotography of staff, data entry, printing of badges when required.

8. Assist with the control of consumable items, monitoring and recording stock levels,informing departmental manager when orders are required

9. Knowledge of a range of electronic systems is essential including ELFs procurement,ESR (Electronic Staff Record) and RiO (Patient Information System).

To undertake other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the relevantline manager.

To minimise the Trusts environmental impact wherever possible, including recycling, switchingoff lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use. Helping to reduce paper wasteby minimising printing/copying and reducing water usage, reporting faults and heating/coolingconcerns promptly and minimising travel. Where the role includes the ordering and use ofsupplies or equipment the post holder will consider the environmental impact of purchases.
