Job summary

The Royal Surrey Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Screening Officer to join the dynamic and friendly NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme's Southern Hub team located on the Surrey Research Park in Guildford.

This dedicated team forms one of five hubs providing Bowel Cancer Screening in England; the Southern Hub serves a population of 16 million people across the South of England.

The Hub invites all 50-74 years olds within its population for bowel screening using a home test kit called FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test). The Hub provides a free phone helpline service, a modern laboratory and liaises with 18 Screening Centres in their provision of colonoscopy investigation for all participants who require further investigations.

The successful candidate will join a team of 30 Screening Officers who are essential in delivering the Hub's daily operation.

Main duties of the job

Screening Officers work across the core areas of the Hub including:

  • Being the first point of contact and supporting the public on our busy telephone helpline.
  • Processing of FIT kits in our laboratory, from kit receipt through to issuing the result.
  • Undertaking administrative duties to ensure we are providing a high quality service for our population.
  • Making suggestions and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

This role suits individuals of all backgrounds who are attentive, caring, have strong spoken and written communication skills, and able to follow documented processes and instructions.

This role is a fixed term contract and part time, 26 hours per week. The Hub operates Monday to Friday and is closed on bank holidays. Days of work will be fixed, with regular days off agreed with the applicant and based on service needs. The Hub is seeking someone with availability to start from mid-September 2026, and the fixed term contract will end on Friday 11 June 2027.

The Hub has free onsite parking and is located on the Surrey Research Park in Guildford, surrounded by green spaces. The Hub building is light, spacious and close to the local amenities of the Royal Surrey Hospital.
