Job summary

Are you a Consultant Psychiatrist looking to contribute to the leadership and clinical expertise of highly skilled team within an acute female inpatient ward?

Based in our Ruby Ward at the Whiteleaf Centre in Aylesbury, you'll work closely with the ward manager and modern matron to provide direct clinical care to all inpatients and leadership to the multidisciplinary team (MDT). Ruby is a a 17-bedded ward for working age women who have acute mental health needs.

This role also offers extensive opportunities for teaching and training of medical students, postgraduate doctors, members of the multidisciplinary team and other service providers, and for appraising and mentoring consultant colleagues. We are looking for candidates who are fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and on the Specialist Register or be within six months of attaining their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or an equivalent approved indicator of training.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide direct clinical care to all inpatients under their care and provide clinical leadership to the MDT, in doing so, work collaboratively with the ward manager and modern matron.
  • Provide direct clinical supervision and line management to the trainees and any senior trainee and/or specialty doctor. This will include one hour per week clinical supervision for core trainees.
  • Undertake the role of Responsible Clinician for all patients detained under the Mental Health Act.
  • Provide timely written correspondence to relevant professionals, documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress, and eventual discharge using Trust IT and clinical records system - training will be provided where needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other agencies, in particular, liaison with colleagues from other teams to manage smooth and timely transfer into and out of the ward.
  • Active commitment to delivering the Trust's clinical governance agenda.

About the Whiteleaf Centre where you'll be based:

This is a psychiatric hospital built in 2014, which currently bases all North Bucks Adult Psychiatric and Older Adult Psychiatric Community Services, Crisis team, Bucks Early Intervention Service, ECT, Bucks Pharmacy, North Bucks Adult Acute Day Hospital and Rehabilitation centre, Memory Clinic, all Bucks Acute Adult wards (two adult, one elderly, one Rehab), Mobile night team, the Bucks ADHD and ASD service, the Bucks Perinatal service and soon a Clinical Research Facility for research done in collaboration with Oxford University Psychiatry Department. This centralisation of services promotes efficient communication andintegrated working across different services. The acute inpatient wards on site are AIMS accredited and the ECT suite has recently renewed its ECTAS accreditation.

Adult Mental Health service in Buckinghamshire

The Adult Mental Health service in Buckinghamshire serves a population of 480000; approximately 342000 aged 18 to 65. The service comprises of: Inpatient pathway: This includes two acute wards 17-bedded female acute ward (Ruby Ward) and 20-bedded male acute wards (Sapphire Ward), and one rehabilitation ward (Opal Ward). PICU for the whole service (Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire) is located at Littlemore Hospital, Oxford. Urgent care pathway: The urgent care pathway provides extended hours service and operates a 24/7.

They work closely with staff on the inpatient wards, out of hours GPs and colleagues from the emergency services to support patients who are experiencing a crisis or require urgent mental health care input. The pathway comprises two Crisis Teams (North and South), Psychiatric Liaison Service (PLS), based at the nearby Stoke Mandeville Hospital, and a street triage service. Community Pathway: Referrals into the community pathway are mainly processed via The Gateway, a referral triage, brief assessment and signposting service.

The pathway includes three Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs). The CMHTs provide all routine assessments and treatment of patients with severe and enduring mental illness. In addition to the CMHTs, the Bucks community pathway includes: a county-wide Early Intervention for Psychosis (BEIS), county-wide Perinatal Service, personality disorder pathways spanning from primary care the Complex Needs service, Bucks Psychological Therapies Service, and Bucks Adult Eating Disorder Service.
