Job summary
As a bank Sonographer at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital Birmingham, you will perform high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations critical to the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients across diverse clinical specialties.
Utilizing the latest sonographic machines, you will acquire and interpret detailed images of a variety of ultrasound exams according to your skill set in obstetric and general medical ensuring precision and diagnostic accuracy.
You will prepare and position patients, provide clear procedural explanations, and maintain strict adherence to hospital protocols and infection control standards. Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute to patient care plans by providing timely, accurate diagnostic ultrasound reports. Your role demands expert knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and sonographic principles, alongside professional certification and commitment to continuous professional development.
This position is pivotal in supporting clinical decision-making and enhancing patient outcomes in a fast-paced, tertiary care setting.

Main duties of the job
The post holder must have relevant NHS experience in ultrasound as they will be responsible for the provision of a highly specialised clinical ultrasound service, ensuring effective patient treatment and diagnosis. The post holder must demonstrate compassionate patient care during all patient contact through the service.
They will be responsible for managing and prioritising workload and to produce comprehensive independent reports. The post holder will work within professional boundaries to improve patient outcomes and take part in the training of others in the specialised field of ultrasound.
In addition to the delivery of the ultrasound service, the post holder will be responsible for
- Training and development of trainee staff in all aspects of clinical service
- Development and implementation of U/S protocols
- Contribution to research and development
- Promotion of service and Imaging standards
- Participation in audit and research
Deliverables:
Accurate and detailed ultrasound images and reports delivered within set timeframes.
Adherence to safeguarding principles and delivering safe compassionate care.
Clear communication of findings to clinical teams to support patient diagnosis and treatment.
Comprehensive documentation of patient information and scan details.
Contribution to maintaining a safe, efficient, and patient-focused scanning environment.
Active participation in team meetings and training sessions to improve service quality.
