We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated, Band 8a Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join our Surgical team.

As part of the Surgical Division, the service comprises a Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) and two General Surgical inpatient wards, delivering care to both elective and emergency patients. Working with colleagues across the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC), the team is committed to ensuring patients receive timely assessment, effective clinical decision-making, and the most appropriate pathway.

The candidate will be a skilled autonomous practitioner with excellent assessment, diagnostic, and decision-making abilities. You will be committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care and will thrive within a multidisciplinary environment.

You will join a department that currently includes five qualified ACP's and one Trainee ACP. The post holder will work a structured rota alongside Foundation Year 1 and Senior House Officer colleagues, contributing to the assessment and management of surgical patients.

The department has a strong track record of supporting Advanced Clinical Practice development and offers robust supervision alongside educational opportunities. ACPs within the team actively contribute to service development, quality improvement, teaching, clinical audit, and research activities. Opportunities exist to develop specialist interests, advanced procedural skills relevant to general surgical practice.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will practise autonomously providing expert, patient-centred care. The ACP will undertake assessments, examination, investigation, diagnosis, treatment planning, referral, and discharge of patients with surgical conditions. The role will support innovative and efficient models of care that promote timely access to specialist assessment and intervention, ensuring safe effective patient care.

The post holder will be responsible for:

Undertaking clinical assessment, clerking, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with a range of surgical conditions.

Requesting, interpreting, acting upon appropriate investigations to support clinical decision-making.

Developing and implementing management plans, including admission, treatment, referral, and discharge decisions.

Independently prescribing within scope of practice and in accordance with local and national policies.

Working with Consultants, specialty doctors, nursing teams, ACPs, allied health professionals, supporting staff to deliver high-quality care.

Participating in ward rounds, multidisciplinary team discussions, and surgical assessment services.

Clinical advice and support to junior doctors, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.

Maintaining comprehensive, and contemporaneous records.

In addition to direct clinical care, the post holder will contribute to the wider development of the service reflecting the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice.
