Junior Sister/Charge Nurse Are you a band 5 with urology experience looking for a new challenge, or an existing Junior sister looking to broaden your skill set? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sister/Charge Nurse to join the J42 Urology Ward team. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic senior nurse who is adaptable, forward-thinking, and committed to leading and embracing change. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership and decision-making skills, with a creative approach to improving patient care. The role involves working closely with the Ward Leader to enhance patient safety, care quality, and overall experience, while also supporting and developing staff at all levels. This includes encouraging, guiding, and facilitating the ongoing development of clinical skills, knowledge, and professional experience. The successful applicant will thrive in a fast-paced ward environment and bring the energy, resilience, and drive needed to support senior leaders, ward staff, and patients, ensuring the highest standards of care are consistently delivered.

Main duties of the job

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with the 24-hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward / department. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team. The jobholder is responsible for helping to develop and maintain a ward or departments philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate safe and quality care delivery. By assisting with managing the administrative and financial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will support the cost-effective use of resources. As an experienced nurse the jobholder will assist in co-ordinating activities on the ward or department ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward/dept. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the nursing team and ensuring effective management of the ward/department in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse. What you will bring to the role You will:

  • Support the Ward Leader in providing effective leadership to the clinical team.
  • Motivate, support, and inspire staff to deliver efficient, safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Promote and deliver a consistently positive patient experience.
  • Encourage the development of effective teamwork and strong collaboration across teams.
  • Proactively identify potential issues and implement preventative measures, mitigation strategies, or contingency plans as required.
  • Assist with the line management of the nursing team, including monitoring individual and team performance and attendance.
  • Support the effective deployment of staff in line with patient flow to ensure safe and efficient care delivery.
  • Participate in and support local and trust-wide recruitment activities.
  • Assist in managing the appropriate use of bank and agency staff.
  • Support the Ward Leader in investigating and responding to accidents, complaints, incidents, and other significant events.
  • Contribute to the delivery of a safe, high-quality, and cost-effective service within agreed budgets.
  • Identify, raise, and respond appropriately to concerns related to risk, safety, malpractice, or wrongdoing, in line with the LTHT whistleblowing policy and procedures.
  • Deputise for the Ward Leader in their absence, as required.
