The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning. In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas:

Nursery Workers

Teaching Assistants

Leadership/Management; and

Customer Care.

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop.

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?

Do you believe that every young person deserves another chance to succeed?

Coventry Learns is seeking an exceptional and compassionate Tutor to join our new Transforming Futures Programme, an innovative re-engagement programme designed to support young people aged 16-18 who are at risk of becoming, or who are already, Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). The programme provides a structured pathway back into learning, training and employment through small group delivery, personalised support and strong progression planning.

This is not a traditional teaching role.

We are looking for an educator who can build trust with young people who may have experienced disrupted education, school refusal, exclusion, poor attendance, adverse childhood experiences, anxiety, low confidence, unidentified learning needs or neurodiverse conditions. Many learners will have become disengaged from education and may present behaviours that challenge, not because they do not want to learn, but because previous educational experiences have not met their needs.

The successful candidate will create engaging, inclusive and learner-centred learning experiences that support young people to rebuild confidence, develop resilience and achieve meaningful progression. Delivery will include personal development, employability, English, maths, digital skills, careers education and vocational exploration, alongside enrichment activities, employer engagement and preparation for positive destinations.

Working closely with the Enabling Access Learner Support Coach, Opportunity Coach and a range of partner organisations, you will play a vital role in helping learners overcome barriers to participation, improve attendance, develop positive learning behaviours and successfully transition into further education, apprenticeships, employment or other sustainable pathways.

This post is a Fixed Term Contract until 31/07/2028

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking someone who:

Understands the complex barriers faced by vulnerable and disengaged young people.

Can build positive, professional relationships and maintain high expectations alongside empathy and understanding.

Is skilled at adapting teaching approaches for learners with varying levels of attainment, confidence and support needs.

Has experience of supporting learners with anxiety, SEND, neurodiversity or challenging behaviours.

Believes in restorative, strengths-based and learner-centred approaches.

Is passionate about helping young people rediscover their potential and achieve successful futures.

Transforming Futures is designed to be the bridge between disengagement and opportunity. As a Tutor, you will be at the heart of that journey, helping young people move from uncertainty and isolation towards confidence, aspiration and positive progression.
