Job summary

This is an opportunity to work on an exciting and fulfilling programme for GPs both locally and nationally. You will join the National Director in the leadership of this well-established fellowship, organising training and supporting GPs through the programme.

The Trailblazer GP fellowship supports newly qualified GPs to work in practices located in areas of socio-economic deprivation. It gives GPs the skills, knowledge and experience to continue working in these challenging but rewarding environments.

Trailblazers are GPs in the first five years after completion of training, employed by practices in areas of deprivation. Each week they spend four to eight sessions working clinically (negotiated with the practice) and have two sessions of personal and professional development time, for which the practice receives a bursary in line with NHSEs national post-CCT fellowship programme.

As well as running the Yorkshire and Humber and national schemes, there is an opportunity to shape and develop the schemes going forward as the national programme expands.

Job description

As the Programme Director you will be:

• Shaping and developing the Yorkshire and Humber and national schemes as the national programme expands.
• Arranging the structured educational content.
• Making timely arrangements for the current cohort and the subsequent one to follow.
• Attending these sessions to support session facilitators.
• Arranging coaches for the fellows. The fellows will be expected to arrange the coaching sessions themselves.
• Managing the applications for incoming cohorts each year.
• Providing pastoral support and encouragement for the quality improvement projects.
• Facilitating some of the structured educational sessions as per their area(s) of expertise.
• Supporting the development of Trailblazer Post-CCT GP fellowship schemes across the country.
• Developing a network of inspirational facilitators who do incredible work in deprivation medicine across the country.

The National Educational Programme

Supported by funding from Health Education England in Yorkshire and the Humber, Fairhealth exists to reduce health inequalities through health professionals education, workforce solutions and advocacy. Further details and the timetable for the national programme are hosted on the Fairhealth website.

Since 2020, other areas of the country have been setting up similar schemes with support from this role. We are currently running one session a month, bringing together Trailblazer Post-CCT GP fellows from across the country for an educational session held remotely online.

Whilst responsibility for organising and hosting the national programme primarily lies with the national director, as the Y&H programme director, you will work closely with the national director and may be required to assist with hosting some of the national sessions.
