- NHS England's recommendations for neonatal services highlight the importance of strong governance structures to monitor patient safety, improve outcomes, oversee incident learning, support regulatory requirements, and drive continuous service improvement.
Main duties of the job
- This role will provide dedicated leadership for neonatal governance activities, including the coordination of clinical audits, investigation of local risks and patient safety incidents, dissemination of learning from incidents, complaints, and reviews, and the development, implementation, and regular review of neonatal guidelines to ensure they remain evidence-based and aligned with current national recommendations.
- The post holder will represent the service at Network and LMNS governance meetings, facilitating the sharing of learning, emerging risks, patient safety incidents, and best practice across organisations to enhance regional awareness and improve outcomes for babies and families.
- Through effective monitoring of quality metrics and embedding lessons learnt into practice, this role will strengthen organisational assurance and support staff to deliver the highest standards of safe, effective, and family-centred neonatal care.
- The Clinical Risk, Governance and Audit Neonatal Nurse will play a key role in supporting the delivery of a safe, high-quality neonatal service, working closely with the Women's and Children's Risk and Governance Manager, Neonatal Matron and wider multidisciplinary team.
Job description
- The post holder will work collaboratively with the Womens and Childrens Risk and Governance Manager, Neonatal Matron, clinical leads and the wider multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of the neonatal clinical governance, patient safety, risk and audit agenda.
- Key areas of responsibility include patient safety and clinical governance, clinical incident investigation and learning, risk management, clinical audit, complaints management, policy and guideline development, governance reporting, information management and supporting the implementation of recommendations arising from local and national learning.
- The post holder will provide visible leadership and specialist support to neonatal staff, promoting an open and positive learning culture and ensuring that learning from incidents, audits, complaints and other governance processes is translated into improvements in clinical practice and patient experience.
- The role will involve working across professional and organisational boundaries and contributing to the implementation and monitoring of national recommendations and standards relevant to neonatal and maternity care.
- The post holder will support and lead a range of neonatal patient safety and clinical governance activities, including the review and investigation of clinical incidents and near misses, identification of themes and trends, clinical risk management and ensuring learning is translated into sustainable improvements in practice.
- A key element of the role will be leading and coordinating the neonatal clinical audit programme, including data collection and analysis, presentation of findings, development of recommendations and action plans, and monitoring improvements following audit.
- The post holder will also support the management of complaints and associated learning, contribute to governance reporting and assurance, and lead the review and governance of neonatal guidelines, policies and standard operating procedures.
- Working collaboratively across neonatal, paediatric and maternity services, the post holder will promote an open, supportive and learning-focused patient safety culture and provide specialist neonatal governance advice and support to staff.
