Research AssistantUniversity

Oxford Full time £35,681 - £39,424 a year
Posted 1 September 2026 Closing date 25 September 2026

Location: Life and Mind Building, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3EL

About the role

Fungal pathogens are a major threat to both plant and animal health. To better aid efforts to combat these threats, it is vitally important that we develop a better understanding of how these harmful organisms can evade host immune responses and compete with co-inhabiting microorganisms, enabling infection. One of the shared research aims of both the Thynne and Van Rhijn Labs, in the Department of Biology, at the University of Oxford, is to explore the mechanisms of fungal virulence in both plant and animal pathosystems. We are looking for a motivated graduate research assistant for a one-year project aimed at exploring the expression, activity, and interactions of a conserved class of small, secreted proteins (effectors) that are involved in virulence. The successful applicant will be responsible for generating and analysing data from lab-based activities. These activities will involve heterologous expression of fungal effectors in model yeast and plant systems.

All work activities will be carried out in the Oxford University’s Department of Biology, in the state-of-the art lab facilities within the recently constructed Life and Mind Building.

This post is full time (37.5 hours) and fixed term until 31 March 2027 in the first instance, although there is possibility of extension.

About You

The role will require experience in fungal and/or plant biology. Further, the successful applicant will be expected to assist in generating the required molecular materials for heterologous expression. Accordingly, the successful applicant will also require experience with molecular cloning and related techniques.

The University of Oxford is committed to equal opportunity, and to being a place where everyone belongs and is supported to succeed.
