Mechanical Maintenance EngineerUniversity

Manchester Full time £31,236 - £34,610 a year
Posted 2 September 2026 Closing date 13 September 2026

About the team or project:

We are a mechanical operations and planned maintenance team consisting of eight staff, including six mechanical engineers, a supervisor and a Mechanical Maintenance Manager, working under the Estates Operations banner alongside the Electrical and Fabric teams. We operate across a campus estate of approximately 44 buildings, including residential properties and the sports complex at Platt Lane.

The three Estates Operations teams, each with specific technical expertise and areas of responsibility, are as follows:

Building Fabric Team: Roofs, windows, joinery, locksmith services and plumbing

Electrical Team: Lighting, low voltage power supplies and emergency power generation

In addition to the above, external contractors are also managed for selected services including grounds maintenance.

About the role:

The post holder will work as part of the Mechanical Maintenance team, responsible for the maintenance, repair and replacement of a wide range of mechanical plant, equipment and systems across the University, under the direction of the Mechanical Maintenance Manager and/or delegated Supervisors. The role supports the ongoing operational status of the University's buildings to ensure delivery of core business functions.

Key responsibilities include reactive, planned and cyclical maintenance tasks as directed by the Mechanical Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Supervisors, or via the Estates maintenance management system (PLANON).

Task progress will be updated through the mobile workflow system (PLANON), ensuring work tickets are accurately completed and closed in a timely manner. Defects should be proactively identified and reported when moving between tasks and buildings.

Close communication with the Maintenance Supervisor and EFCD Helpdesk is required regarding workload status and any issues that may affect completion within SLA timescales.

The role involves promoting good health and safety practice, maintaining high standards of housekeeping, and identifying and reporting hazards or emergencies within working areas.

Compliance with University statutory policies is essential, including reading and following relevant risk assessments and supporting the need for risk assessment where appropriate.

Routine checks of buildings, services, plant and equipment will be undertaken to ensure they remain safe and fit for purpose, with defects reported promptly to maintain safety and customer satisfaction.

Personal protective equipment, tools and systems must be used appropriately, maintained in good condition, and stored correctly when not in use.

The role is campus-based, working Monday to Friday, 8.45am-4.30pm, reporting to the Mechanical Maintenance Manager.

About the candidate:

We are looking for enthusiastic and proactive individuals with mechanical engineering experience in a busy site-based environment, or transferable skills gained from other mechanical sectors.

Strong communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively with management, staff and students on a daily basis. The successful candidate will be confident managing their workload while supporting team members across all areas of work.

A commitment to continuous improvement of business processes and a strong team-focused ethos is also important.
