Academic Tutor in Computer Science and Software EngineeringUniversity

Sheffield Full time £32,080 - £38,784 a year
Posted 20 August 2026 Closing date 13 September 2026

The Role

We are seeking to recruit an experienced software developer to teach as an Academic Tutor on our undergraduate and apprenticeship programmes in computer science and software engineering. This is a teaching role, supporting our undergraduate students as they learn in practical laboratory sessions, helping them work in teams on applied projects, supporting them both online and face-to-face as they tackle programming assignments, and grading their assignment submissions.

Our courses are built around a project-based pedagogy in which students develop their knowledge and skills by working in teams on problems that are sourced from businesses across the UK. The successful candidate will use their commercial skills to help students use appropriate industry-standard tools and approaches to design, build, and test solutions to those problems.

The role requires someone who has varied experience and skills, who can work across platforms, and is happy using many different tools. Most importantly we are looking for someone who is an exceptional communicator, who can take the complexity of modern software development, distil it to its essential core, and present that to novice developers.

The School

The School of Computing and Digital Technologies (CDT) is a large and vibrant school engaged in taught programs, research and innovation, and knowledge exchange. All our UG and PG programs are underpinned by project-based learning, which facilitates embedding industry experience across all the programs. CDT is also home to the Centre of Excellence for AI and Robotics (CEAIR), a strategic hub for applied AI, robotics, innovation, and skills development. The Centre helps organisations prototype, test, and scale human-centred AI and robotics solutions that improve productivity, support workforce transformation, and deliver measurable social and commercial value. CEAIR combines cutting-edge research with applied delivery, and their focus is not AI for its own sake, but AI that solves operational challenges, improves productivity, enhances services, and creates competitive edge.

CDT is in the top ten biggest computing Departments/Schools in the UK, with more than 2,500 students and nearly 100 staff. We teach a vast array of topics including computer science, software development, data analytics/science, computer games development, AI, machine learning, cyber security, cyber forensics, advanced computer networking, cloud technologies, information technology management, robotics.

CDT is located right at the heart of Sheffield city centre, putting you right in the middle of this industry. Sheffield is home to a thriving digital and tech industry, employing over 21,000 people and generating billions of pounds in the region. Alongside our many connections with digital and tech businesses, we conduct our own work in industry. Steel Minions is our commercial games development studio, where students create and publish their own games on the PlayStation store. We also work closely with the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC), the Advanced Food Innovation Centre (AFIC), and the Centre of Excellence in Terrorism, Resilience, Intelligence and Organised Crime (CENTRIC).
