Job summary

A new vacancy has arisen for a phlebotomist to join our nursing team at Brannam Medical Centre. Experience preferred but training will be provided for the right candidate.

The successful applicant will be providing support the Nursing Team ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and efficient care within their scope of practice. Duties include taking blood, monitoring of blood pressure, weight and height plus preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

The role will also include training and development of junior health care assistants and students to support improved services for our patients.

You will need to have excellent communication skills, be caring, sensitive and empathetic, have good IT abilities, be able to manage your time, work as a team member and autonomously and can work under pressure in a busy medical practice.

We welcome applicants that are currently working in primary care as well as applicants that have come from a hospital or community background.

Main duties of the job

Follow guidelines and policies for venepuncture and INR star (which you have received appropriate training).

Provide a safe phlebotomy service and ensure correct use of ICE / electronic requesting systems.

Recognise and respond appropriately to adverse patient reactions (e.g.fainting, bleeding).

Ensuring safe storage, rotation and disposals of vaccines, sharps and drugs and that adequate stock levels and adherence to cold chain is maintained.

Stock rotation and ordering of treatment room supplies.

Measuring and recording following physiological measurements in routine presentations.

Assist in practice audits, CQC compliance evidence and QOF recall

Maintain accurate patient records using agreed templates, Read Codes and recall systems.

Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care on system 1.

Maintain strict adherence to Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) standards, including hand hygiene, PPE, and safe disposal of sharps.

Provide a calm, reassuring, and professional service to patients with varying needs.

Attend and participate in staff and Practice meetings and in-house clinical training sessions.

Ability to manage distressed, anxious, or needlephobic patients and work in fastpaced clinics with high through put.

Job description

• Collection of blood samples by recommended techniques.
• Accurate labelling of blood specimens and forms using ordercomms as appropriate.
• Ordering adequate stocks of phlebotomy equipment and sample bottles.
• In house warfarin monitoring as per protocol

Other Treatment Room Duties

• Restocking of equipment.
• Daily checking of equipment.
• Chaperoning.
• Assisting all Treatment Room staff as required.
• Attending team meetings as required.

• Attend courses as per the practice development plan and personal development plan
• Attend study days and course required for the post
• Attend an annual appraisal/individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development
• Take responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.

Health & Safety

• A responsibility under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 to report all potential and actual risks.
