Job summary

To provide the highest possible standards of care and service to all of the residents, as well as in addition to a supervisory role. As a Senior Care Assistant you will be in charge of a shift of workers and will take responsibility for the smooth running of the service whilst you are on duty. You will respond to emergencies and provide guidance and support to Care Assistants under the supervision of qualified Nursing Staff.

Main duties of the job

• To assist residents with those activities which they would usually perform or have in the past performed themselves but cannot now without assistance.
• Carry out regular checks on residents and the environment throughout the day/night to ensure safety standards are maintained.
• Provide care as laid out in the care plans under the direction of the Manager and Nursing Staff.
• Organise the care staff for the shift, delegate care based on your knowledge of the residents and staff levels and abilities.
• Ensure all Care Assistants within the team follow personalised care plans for residents and encourage them to contribute towards care plan development and reviews.
• Report to the Nurse on Duty or the Manager any changes or deterioration you observe in the health and general condition of residents.
• To promptly answer all nurse alarm calls, assessing each situation and dealing with any resident who is seeking help, escalating situations to the Nurse on Duty or Manager if necessary.

• To assist residents with those activities which they would usually perform or have in the past performed themselves but cannot now without assistance. The optimum level of independence should be encouraged and supported whilst maintaining the dignity and self-esteem of the residents.
• Contribute to the updating, development and review of care plans, ensuring involvement of residents / representatives at all times.
• Carry out regular checks on residents and the environment throughout the day / night, to ensure standards are maintained.
• To answer promptly to all nurse alarm calls, assessing each situation and dealing with any resident who is seeking help. In cases of emergency to summon the qualified Nursing Staff or Manager and if necessary to call the emergency GP and/or summon an ambulance.
• To assist residents who need help or reassurance, providing drinks or refreshments where required.
• Complete, observe and review care planning needs for residents, and complete written daily records as instructed and in line with the Companys policies and procedures.
• To administer prescribed medication, following the homes Administration of medication policies & procedure.
• Organise the care staff for the shift, delegate care based on your knowledge of the residents and staff levels and abilities.
• Ensure that all Care Assistants with in your team follow the personalised care plans for residents and encourage them to contribute towards their development and review.
• Develop positive, helpful and caring relationships with residents and their families as required.
• Maintain absolute discretion and confidentiality at all times.
• Be aware of and comply with Health and Safety and Infection Control regulations and report any actual or potential hazards to the Registered Nurse or Manager.
• Take every opportunity to improve your skills and knowledge both by self-development and by participating in training events organised both inside the home and by outside sources.
• To complete any mandatory training specified during the induction period and thereafter to ensure that you are competent to fulfil the responsibilities of your role.
